Players who you may not know too well......
Add to the list....
M Zahid- Probably the fastest bowler ever! Took 11 wickets in his debut test match vs NZ but then had serious back problems. During the C& U series in AUS in 1996/97 he absolutely terrorized BC Lara and impressed every one including Hooper who said that M Zahid was the only bowler ever to make him(Hooper) stand up.
Wasim Raja- AMAZING talent. Outstanding players of express pace bowling and also bowled handy leg spin
Eknath Solkar- Wonderful fielder, probably India's finest ever!
Iqbal Qasim- Not as gifted as A Qadir but still a very useful bowler and played a big part in many of PAK's wins including arguably THE most famous one at Bangalore.
Gupte- World class leg spin bowler, Sobers was a HUGE fan of Gupte. If i am not mistaken Sobers thinks that Gupte> Warne
Dave Houghton- Arguably ZIM's 2nd best cricketer ever. Interesting David also represented ZIM in hockey and was described by the Pakistan hockey team captain as the best goal-keeper he had ever played against. This at a time when PAK were the best hockey team in the world.

Ian Bell - Once described by Dayle Hadlee as the best 16-year old he had ever seen, Ian Bell had been earmarked for greatness long before he was drafted onto the England tour of New Zealand in 2001-02, as cover for the injured Mark Butcher. Tenacious and technically sound, Bell is a top-order batsman very much in the mould of Michael Atherton, who was burdened with similar expectations when he made his England debut a generation ago. And like Atherton, it is Bell's mental attitude to the game that has set him apart from his peers.

Was watching one of the re-runs Fox has and this player featured recently and all Bill Lawry was saying was the hopeless Qasim comes into bowl again.

Qasim was a good bowler, and an annoying batsman (especially with Asif Iqbal at the other end).

Re: Players who you may not know too well......
Alan "Froggy" Thomson. A rubbish Vomit "quick" who bowled off the wrong foot, who played 4 Ashes Tests for Aus on the MCC's 1970-71 Ashes tour.
In my very formative years following the great game (this is the first series I can remember as a boy) I had to endure this man bowling for Aus. He was one of the first quicks that started a trend of bowling well against a touring side to earn a place in the Test series. Chris Matthews was perhaps one of the more famous other exponents of the infuriating habit.
Perhaps Froggy's greatest claim to fame was that he miraculously hung on as the no. 11 batsman (and he was complete sh!t with the bat) as Rod Marsh inched his way into the 90s at the MCG in that series. No Aussie wicketkeeper had ever made a ton in a Test to that point so it was gripping stuff, only for Bill Lawry to ruin the fun by declaring with Marsh on 92*.

Who was the leggie who hung around for Dougie to score a ton during an Ashes test? The names on the tip of my tongue.

Re: Players who you may not know too well......
Are you sure you aren't thinking of Jimmy Higgs at the MCG against the Snoozers? He helped KDW to his very last ton in Test Cricket.
He was out early in his innings caught off the glove from a bouncer from Lance Cairns [snigger] but Robin Bailhache gave him not out via a shortlived intimidatory bowling rule. PMSL.
Dougie would've been stranded in the 80s.

That's the one skulls. Don't know where the Ashes slipped into my addled mind but I remember the controversy over that rule.

Screw the stats, Atherton was worth 5 Ian Bells. 5 Ian Bells couldn't save/win a match between them. So in fact 1 Atherton>5 Ian Bells.philcric wrote:Ian Bell - Once described by Dayle Hadlee as the best 16-year old he had ever seen, Ian Bell had been earmarked for greatness long before he was drafted onto the England tour of New Zealand in 2001-02, as cover for the injured Mark Butcher. Graham Roope: played a handful of tests in the 70s. Nothing special with the bat, but could catch flies at slip. Had the distinction of being the non-striking batsman when John Edrich and Geoff Boycott scored the 100th run od their respective 100th hundreds.

Farque off you SGDT .....He took 380 FC wickets and if he given as long a run at Test Cricket as some of the useless dubbers of his vintage you'd realise how good a bowler he actually was

Which match was that Red?
Speaking of Qasims...
Qasim Umar- Aggressive top order batsman who did a fairly useful job in the 26 test matches that he played but Imran destroyed his career.

The first test cricketer to be the object of an infatuation by a Channel 9 commentator.

The incident gets a brief mention in this summary of a cricket highlights package from that Test match -

... and a terrific reaction from Kerry Packer (Ya gotta read this) -

"Dave Houghton- Arguably ZIM's 2nd best cricketer ever. Interesting David also represented ZIM in hockey and was described by the Pakistan hockey team captain as the best goal-keeper he had ever played against. This at a time when PAK were the best hockey team in the world."
As coach, he apparently had run ins with one of the best genuine allrounders the ODI form ever had: yet another Zimbabwean "who you may not know too well", Neil Johnson. A left handed opener and medium paced bowler, he had a quick but notable career for his country that did not quite last 2 years, before he gave up on Zimbabwe (like so many others) to play for various FC sides.
His 1999 World Cup was scintillating: perhaps no other player did more for Zimbabwe in what remains the peak of their success. He played a crucial role with both bat and ball in their victories over South Africa: his ton against Australia was not enough to see his team over the line. From 8 matches, 367 runs @ 52.42, 12 wickets @ 19.41, he must have been a serious consideration for man of the series.
Just one of a list of Zimbabwean players about whom one wonders what might have been if the ZCU and the whole country were better run.

Guy Whittall was another one. An attractive batsman capable of batting anywhere in the order, and useful medium pacer, Whittall made some vital runs for Zimbabwe over the years. He retired prematurely after the 2003 world cup aged 30.
