Walking in Memphis Empty Walking in Memphis

Post by Chivalry Augustus Sat 30 Jan 2010, 21:59

Alright then, so which of you raving bumosexuals are prepared to own up to your homosexuality by revealing that you DO NOT like the bestest song of all time - Marc Cohn's Walking in Memphis? Form an orderly line you epic queer-mos.

And in the meantime can someone explain to me why this song is the wallet raping, ball aching, face caramelising price of 99p on GayTunes? Why ain't it 79p like them other songs what aren't as good as it? Is there a premium to pay on white boys singing like black boys?

PS - what's with that iPad rubbish? Is it a glorified tampon 'cause it don't do much else.

1. Never even heard of the song until now.

2. No idea

3. I would agree if I knew more.

I prefer Cher's version where the theme of gender ambiguity is more explicitly addressed although I don't know what that says about me:

I would burn Cher's living corpse until she was almost half-dead then beat her to within a quarter of her life with each of her (increasingly terrible) albums, then I would finally deliver the c'oup de grace with the evil microphone that first graced her voice as well as the limbs of numerous Cher 'tribute acts' whom I had previously discombobulated en route to deliver such a telling destruction of the evil force that you know merely as Cher - whom I instead would call devil witch beast monkey Ian Bell Geraint Jones demon. Rarrrrrrrgggggh. Here's some good sh*t though:

The instruction manual says 'female singers with incessantly masculine characteristics are not suited to ordinary conflagration and must therefore be ignited by means of a firework, thrust into an orifice that would in turn (but for the imminent explosion) denote a path through the intestines.'

Personally I am cool with going medieval on Cher. Scaphism would be too good for that girl/thing/manbearpig.

I don't know the song. It sounds like Fats Domino meets Rufus Thomas, Robert Johnson, Rameses and King Elvis on some sort of rock'n'roll road to Emmaus.

I think that Cohn's intention was to make the song deliberately eclectic as it is unusual for a pop song to be based on a piano solo of some complexity. I think it is a worthier tribute to 'The King' than the truly awful Black Velvet by the Canadian singer, Alannah Myles, which appeared 2 years before Cohn's song, in 1989. It is interesting to note, though, the enormous number of songs that are about, or reference, Presley:

This one's nicely done - the Elvis bit is only one element - and a fab performance of it.

Riding With the King by John Hiatt is a class tune about Elvis.
I'd provide a link, but I'm at work so I can't. Sorry.

I think the song's kind of hackneyed and cliched and a bit sh*t. Anyway why should your average Brit care about catfish on the table, gospel in the hall, being a christian child, blue suede shoes and sodding Elvis anyway?

Having had some exposure to Chiv's turn of phrase and wit over the years, I remember first reading this as 'bum Cher's living corpse'. Only realised later that it was an 'r' and an 'n' not an 'm'.
