Very sad, though miraculous that there were some survivors.

Re: Plane crash in India
RIP to all deceased.
Thats 3rd major aircraft related disaster in last month or so, at least which I can remember.
First was when 96 people were killed (including almost entire Polish cabinet) in that plane crash in Russia. Then, there was that tragedy in Libya when out of 110-odd passengers on board an 8-year old was the only survivor. And now this.

Dreadful looking runway but. Seemed like one of them mountaintop jobs you see footage of in Papua New Guinea.

Pilot was a Serbian and had close to 100 landings on the same airport.

Another major air tragedy averted.
A Srinagar-bound SpiceJet aircraft with 186 passengers on board landed under emergency conditions in New Delhi on Monday after Air Traffic Control learnt that it had suffered a tyre burst while taking off and asked it to return.
The Boeing 737-800 was airborne for 15 minutes and had travelled nearly 100 miles before it turned around.
The aircraft safely landed back in Delhi and all passengers are safe, an airline spokesperson said.
Pilots of another aircraft, which landed soon after the SpiceJet flight SG-224 took off at 1430 hrs, noticed pieces of tyre on the runway and informed the ATC, which swung into action and asked the cockpit crew of the low-cost carrier plane to return.
A full emergency was declared at the Indira Gandhi International Airport when the aircraft made a precautionary landing at around 1450 hours, airport sources said.
As fire brigades, ambulances, engineering teams and other services remained positioned, the aircraft first made a low pass over the runway.
Airport engineers then noticed a burst tyre on the right side of the aircraft and asked the pilots to try a smooth sail landing.
"Keeping the safety of passengers in mind, as a precaution, the aircraft returned to Delhi. We followed all procedures for landing in such situations," the spokesperson said.

Re: Plane crash in India
Have you flown the Indian skies, SG? Is it as hair-raising as it can be sometimes made out to be?

Re: Plane crash in India
Just lots of stories about crazy airport attendants, hosties, schedules and pilots. You know, the general chaos that is India.
But good news that crashes are a rare occurrence.

Indian aviation generally has a good record. However they are not keeping up with the required investment for the future.
The hair raising scenario pertains to road traffic which is a nightmare. Trains in comparison have a much safer record.

Re: Plane crash in India
In major Indian cities, that is. The problem is ever increasing no. of vehicles on road. I know the figures of my own city which is Delhi. As many as 950 vehicles are registered daily in Delhi. Add the no. of big trucks entering Delhi from border states. The hair raising scenario pertains to road traffic which is a nightmare.
One can easily assume the kind of mayhem so many vehicles will unleash. After all, the road space will remain limited, no matter how many fly overs you construct.

Re: Plane crash in India
most deaths occur on highways and mostly due to poor driver training and separation of traffic, not high densities. probably 95% of indians (or more) would not be able to drive properly in a country like germany
