Re: The Australian Federal Election 2010 Thread (III)
I think it's almost certain that things will finish Coalition 73 - ALP 72.
But an extra seat to the Coalition (making things 74 - 71) would throw a cat amongst the pigeons and make it very difficult for the indies to go with Labor.
But that final seat tally is very unlikely, so I stick by my prediction that the indepdents will eventually support a Labor minority government.

Aye, if you add the Libs refusal today to show Katter their budget costings, it all points clearly to the two rational Indies (Windsor and Oakeshott) and the mad man (Katter) siding with Big Red. Add that weirdo Brandt to the mix and Julia has the numbers.

Who reckons Wilkie will take the speaker's job (at least until we have a referendum to introduce a truly indepdendent speaker)?

This article rings true. Why the f*ck are we letting these three country bumpkins decide the nation's future?

Doesn't Abbott want to be PM? He seems hell bent on pissing off the Independents.

Dennis Shanahan is talking absolute crap.
What arrogance writing these three independents off as "country bumpkins". I've heard more good sense come out of their mouths in the past five days than I did out of Abbott and Gillard's mouths over past five weeks of the campaign.
The world will not end if we take another week or two to sort this out. As duly elected MPs the independents have every right to make sure they don't just back one side over the other without good reason.
It took Steve Bracks a few weeks in 1999 to form a minority government with the support of three rural MPs. He treated them with respect, giving them access to executive briefings. They acted with restraint and Victoria had a successful and stable three years of government.
We should only go to a new election if talks break down on both sides and forming a government is impossible. We are a LONG way away from that yet.

Now that disgraceful qunt Fielding is suggesting that he might block all Alp bills until 1 July if they form govt.

aye. To get themselves elected as independants they need to be blessed with shedloads of common sense and clarity.

Despite global trends where the Greens have been getting more and more influential? Not saying that's a good thing, but don't underestimate the stupidity of the populace...bodyline wrote:JGK wrote:Zat wrote:Abbott has shown up once again that he is an arrogant boob, better suited to leading the BCCI than a political party. On top of Truss's outburst on Saturday night, the odds on a Coalition govt are lengthening.
As for NSW... is there any chance that the swing could sweep the ALP to single-figure seats in March? Please...
I reckon there is a very strong chance of the Greens winning more seats than the ALP at the next election as they will get all the ALP prefs before the Liberal prefs (and vice versa) and they may come close to getting 3/4 of the ALPs primary vote.
Does anyone recall - the democrats???? The greens will go the same way.

Don't feel bad bl, David Koch kept making the same mistake, as did Seven's 'Election for Dummies (and the terminally soft in the head)' on the weekend.

Keating called the Senate 'unrepresentative swill'. Fielding is the dregs of the swill bucket. Or possibly what the pigs excrete several hours after consuming the swill. And I know this is probably a big call, but he may just be the stupidest person ever elected to office in this country.

''The election gave Labor a huge slap across the face, saying you're not worthy of a second term,'' he told ABC Radio.
Do you think he even understands how the preferential voting system works?
Of course, the election gave Stephen Fielding a huge slap across the face as well saying he wasn't worthy even for a spot in Parliament.

Of course, the election gave Stephen Fielding a huge slap across the face as well saying he wasn't worthy even for retaining the less than one percent of the vote, or the shonky preference deal that allowed him to weasel his way into a spot in Parliament.

I think we should go back to the polls
But a lot of people say, just because you don't like the result, does not mean you go back to the polls. I can see their point.

Most of us would like to see reform in the political process. A minority government might provide the leverage.

Well I think the only advocates of going back to the polls are dyed in the wool Labor voters and rusted on Liberal voters.

If we go back to the polls, I reckon a bunch of people who were toying with the idea of voting for an independent might just say 'f*ck you' to the major parties, and we could wind up with more independents.
Except in my part of the world, where they'd still vote for Menzies.

It's not the minority government that is an issue - it is the senate and the two indies there - no legislation till July next year?
