It's perfectly possible that Griffin speaking and inciting racial hatred will cause a racially motivated attack. It does not have to result in death, it may just result in destroying a person's life. In fact, I read an article yesterday that said:

Ms Guthrie - National Campaigner for the group Unite Against Fascism - said there had also been a rise in racial attacks whenever Nick Griffin's BNP party gained seats on local councils.

So there is a link between the BNP and racially motivated violence. It's not purely speculative. Whereas someone campaigning against the BNP attacking and killing Griffin is highly unlikely.

BNP seats, in wards, are increasing. Allowing its leader to speak exposes what he's really about and may reduce the number of people joining this party.

The BNP uses peoples fears and anger at what they feel is having no voice.

We have BNP councillors in Kirklees, read this http://www.thepressnewspaper.co.uk/TheForum.asp letters page and the Ed Lines too to get an idea of what they can use when some people feel ignored. I get the feeling sometimes some people on here post from ivory towers......

Hope is eternal, thanks to Pandora's box......

Are there some great pieces of literature that leave you feeling there is no hope?

They should also invite and Abu Hamza and co and leave them to have a "Debate" with BNP and Co. That is fair and I'll even pay to see the live debate!

Off the top of my head, the first time I read "Winter of Our Discontent" I felt quite hopless until Ethan finds the talisman in his pocket at the end . . . also when Tony is tricked into staying in the jungle to read Dickens in A Handful of Dust brings me close to despair.

Oh, and the relationship between Paul Morel and his mother in Sons and Lovers . . . hopeless. That was probably the most painful book I've read.

That's because D.H. Lawrence had a skewed reletionship with his own mother.

Actually there's a few dark works out there when you really think about it, I just tend not to.

Actually, Catcher in the Rye leaves me feeling pretty hopeless, but maybe that's just because it's such a crap (or should I say corny, it kills me) book.
