Re: Spanky thinks cricket is ******
It’s a pity Roebuck wrote this article. In my eyes he is usually pretty balanced. This, though, is nothing but a rant that reeks of sour grapes and a capsized ego.
Why do people outside India consider the IPL an insult to cricket? Hell it doesn’t even have the word ‘cricket’ in its name. It seems to give joy to millions - the vast majority of whom are tradionalists - not only in India if one were to believe the global transmission figures, employs thousands in the country and finally allows cricketers an income worthy of their efforts. No cricketer, foreign or Indian, is forced into the auction, which, by its very definition, factors in a player-determined minimum price, ergo a voluntary application.
IPL, on the contrary, embraces cricket by the very fact that it allows contracted players to leave anytime when called upon for national duty. Roebuck’s arguments about corruption in India are pretty much blinkered in as much as corruption governs almost all sport with a multimillion fan base, whether it be in Britain, Australia, the US or India, the only difference being quantitative and the international profile of the sport.
Roebuck’s rant about Pakistan not being let into the IPL is another misinformed oratory orgasm. The man obviously hasn’t researched the reasons behind the rejection or the monetary and emotional repercussions within India. After all, it is a profit oriented enterprise, financed by some of India’s best known industrialists. Does one expect Pakistan (as a country) to be rewarded for garnering terrorism as a means to an end? 26/11 has its own tale to tell and the broad masses in Bombay have lingering memories of their beloved Taj in flames. Who can blame them?

I still also believe that cricket journos do the sport no favours by constantly talking it down or pointing out weaknesses. The AFL for instance, has loads of problems ranging from the off-field behaviour of its players, anomalous 'draws', patchy crowds and imbalances in teams' finances, yet its publicity machine is always super positive.

Patrick Smith is a negative writer about just about anything
Hagdorn finds the negative in every Fremantle story
Rucci doesnt rwite anything positive about Adelaide

Because it is a pure triumph of cash over quality.mirchy wrote:Why do people outside India consider the IPL an insult to cricket?
As it is 'administered' by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, that seems to be a rather redundant, ridiculous and stupid argument.Hell it doesn’t even have the word ‘cricket’ in its name.
So do marijuana, heroin, and prostitutionIt seems to give joy to millions
Really? These would be the same traditionalists that stay away from Test cricket in droves?- the vast majority of whom are tradionalists -
Source? And some specific figures please.not only in India if one were to believe the global transmission figures,
So does weapons manufacturing.employs thousands in the country
Finally? The money is, first and foremost, what the IPL is all about.and finally allows cricketers an income worthy of their efforts.
Then why was Sri Lanka's Test tour of England a couple of years ago shitcanned when it clashed with the IPL? Because the players wanted the cash on offer from playing a mickey mouse form of the game for loads of moolah instead of playing for their country. And there have been many other instances of players complaining that they couldn't line their pockets with filthy lucre from the IPL because their boards had scheduled international matches at IPL time. And why is the BCCI angling for (read threatening the cash flow to the ICC with) a 'window' for the IPL, during which time no international cricket could be played? No cricketer, foreign or Indian, is forced into the auction, which, by its very definition, factors in a player-determined minimum price, ergo a voluntary application.
IPL, on the contrary, embraces cricket by the very fact that it allows contracted players to leave anytime when called upon for national duty.
I'm pretty sure the (in no particular order) NFL, NBA, English Premier League, AFL, IRB, and the ATP would take you to court if you suggested specifically that they were anywhere near as corrupt as Indian sport seems to be, even the most blinkered pro-Indian nationalists on this board have willingly admitted that corruption in Indian sport in general and cricket in particular is rife. And by the way, where is Lalit Modi and what is he doing now?Roebuck’s arguments about corruption in India are pretty much blinkered in as much as corruption governs almost all sport with a multimillion fan base, whether it be in Britain, Australia, the US or India, the only difference being quantitative and the international profile of the sport.
Thanks for playing, now come back when you can construct a reasoned argument instead of talking utter crap.
