This Women's football world cup thing.
Just stumbled across it when changing channels from Wimbledon. Australia leading Equatorial Guinea 3-1.
It looks quite a bit sh!t.

Actually, I take that last comment back. It doesn't look quite a bit sh!t, it looks a whole lot sh!t.
In just the last five minutes I've witnessed a goal to EQG on a par with something in late primary school, and one of the Aussie girls going to dribble, and STEPPING on the ball.

The professional women's game in the States is pretty good. The women's game here is trying to improve.
It's not the same as men's football, never will be, but it can be entertaining.

EQG gets a free kick on the half way line. The ball lands at the edge of the penalty box. There's about 16 players in a pack you could throw a rug over. Another junior football thing I wouldn't have expected a a 'world cup' level.

Well that's just because you're watching Australia play Equatorial Guinea, ffs.
I'm impressed that EQG have a team and the infrastructure to produce women footballers! As for Australia, they have no excuse to be crap, except soccer's not a main sport. Watching Germany v USA would be a better indicator.
But then again, how many sports with a world cup still consist mainly of amateurs? Only women's ones.

Equatorial Guinea's only previous sporting claim to fame (perhaps any sort of claim to fame) was Eric the Eel... how the crap did they qualify for this?

Safe to assume they didn't win a swim-off.
Re: This Women's football world cup thing.
All of which underlines my point.
By all means, have a world cup, but make it something worth watching...

Just read on the official site that Australia pushed Brazil in the first pool match. And Brazil is one of the powerhouses.Yorkie Jill wrote:Well that's just because you're watching Australia play Equatorial Guinea, ffs.

I'm not that interested, but I do wonder if they have like the associate system the ICC has. maybe EQG are on the cusp of becoming a top nation...just like they were at swimming, with Eric 'if I were an eel I'd probably be dead quite quickly'.
Well then they have even less excuse to do something daft the one game you looked in on...I though they were maybe on a par with England, but behind Brazil, USA and Germany. Did Ellyse Perry make the cut for the squad?

Sport is sport. If two equally crap teams are competing at an equally crap level it's still a contest.
You could have the Men's WC where 22 highly skilled and highly paid athletes do their best during the first round not to lose, instead of trying to win.
And I know about losing soccer teams. Just ask the bartender at the Bricklayer's Arms or the 703 Club.

Still, this sort of thing doesn't hurt the sport.

I rather like it. The England ladies play with fear written all over their faces just like the men do...

It's a bit like wheelchair tennis. Good for them, but if you can't get a rally going, it shouldn't be on tele.
Re: This Women's football world cup thing.
They showed men's tennis in the 1990's didn't they... ace, return into the net, ace, double fault, ace...Dello wrote:...but if you can't get a rally going, it shouldn't be on tele.

If Keys and Gray had substituted the word "handball" for "offside" they might have had a case for reinstatement...

Now, if they wore that as a kit you could fill an 80,000 seater stadium

And from sickipedia...
I'm thinking of complaining to Ofcom about recent BBC scheduling.
I mean, there are no highlights in Women's Football.
I just saw the Equatorial Guinea v Australia footage on youtube. Hilarious... Women playing football
Women's World Cup?
Andy Gray doesn't believe it either...
