Amir and Butt lose appeals
HERE
Amir's pleas for a suspended sentence fall on deaf ears. Butt's career is over, and his future post-release looks permanently blighted. The lawyers are doing very well out of all this.

I'm hardly surprised, I could've saved them money and told them not to bother. I'm not going to lob something jovial about them getting raped though, just because they bowled a couple of no balls, that would be so incredibly precious.
Re: Amir and Butt lose appeals
Sensible (and the only) decision available, given the evidence.
Aye, leave the bar o' soap out of this - let them serve their time and then disappear into obscurity with what's left of their ill gotten loot.
The crime would be to welcome them back into cricket - and I fear the 18 year old quick might just achieve that.

Re: Amir and Butt lose appeals
I think he will. The others definitely won't. Asif has been a blight on international cricket almost from his inception, what with the drugs. And the drugs. Butt has always been pretty shite, quite intelligent and articulate though... his post-cricket career would've involved punditry / journalism. It's doubtful anyone will touch him though.
As for Amir, he's playing the naive card - which is balls. He was blatantly the puppet, though. FC cricket, no doubt, in Pakistan. Doubtful international honours, though.

Those ancient squabbles between the infant prodigy Afridi and Mohammed Asif ... what's said about what was behind them, now?

Asif squeezed the middle of the toothpaste. Afridi could not stand this. Asif argued that it makes no difference. Afridi said that although in the end there was little difference, it was the getting there that was more arduous. They settled their differences with an omelette challenge, so it was all cool.

As the elder, Asif should have known better.

Re: Amir and Butt lose appeals
After the 5 year ban world cricket should welcome Amir with open arms as he would have suffered way too much for his actions. Unfortunately there is no consistency among cricket fans.

Consistency, how? AFAIK, this is the first time anyone has got done for spot-fixing. The match-fixers were hardly welcomed with open arms, were they?
Re: Amir and Butt lose appeals
Most people on this forum(and outside) don't have a problem with Warne and M Waugh.Brass Monkey wrote:Consistency, how? AFAIK, this is the first time anyone has got done for spot-fixing. The match-fixers were hardly welcomed with open arms, were they?
Wasim Akram is also given a lot of respect.
Forget about going to jail these guys weren't even banned for a single game.

Re: Amir and Butt lose appeals
Mark Waugh, Shane Warne and Wasim Akram were all cleared of any match-fixing allegations - i.e. no evidence was produced to confirm anything untoward went on. Certain murmurs aren't enough to muddy their names, all that has occurred in regard to them is hearsay.
Re: Amir and Butt lose appeals
well see that's not fully true according to Qayyum's report in 2000.Brass Monkey wrote:Mark Waugh, Shane Warne and Wasim Akram were all cleared of any match-fixing allegations - i.e. no evidence was produced to confirm anything untoward went on. M Waugh and Warne confessed of having connections with the bookies and were almost certainly involved in a lot more than just weather updates. Even if they ONLY gave weather/pitch updates(it's quite silly to believe that) and got money for it then they should have been banned for a while.
YET when it comes to an 18 year old bowling no balls every one on this forum is fully in agreement with the decision of sending him to jail AND banned for cricket....

Re: Amir and Butt lose appeals
So, you're happy to make up stuff? Nowhere in the Qayyum report does anything near a fact come out that Warne and Waugh did anything other than provide information of conditions. Assumptions can possibly be made, but that's it - one can let their imagination run wild. Cold hard facts point to them doing nothing of the sort.
People on here are hardline. Fair enough, in their eyes, why should they be different? I see their point, but find them mainly to be immensely hysterical and dramatic so much so that they may as well be in a pantomime....
However, the fact he's 18 has little to do with it, he took money to fix balls, he knew it was wrong, so he's not innocent. Of course a ban was going to follow. Maybe I find the prison sentence a bit harsh, but I'm not really sure what I expected in criminal proceedings.
It seems to me that being a massive fan of Amir's is clouding your judgement heavily, you've clutched at straws in your argument.

Re: Amir and Butt lose appeals
Qayyum report was obviously about Wasim Akram.
Amir is not innocent hence i am ok with a cricketing ban, it's the jail sentence which i have an issue with(and you seem to agree with me there)
As i said earlier even if we go solely by what Warne and Waugh confessed to they still deserved some sort of a ban. I won't complain if the people on the forum expressed same sort of hatred towards Warne as currently being directed towards Amir.

Re: Amir and Butt lose appeals
There was no actual evidence, as such, to convict Wasim Akram. Ata-ur-Rehman may have been able to but he retracted his statement. Since he had a grudge against Akram, he could be considered to be mud-flinging. There is much more murkiness surrounding Akram, but again he hasn't been found guilty, so there's no reason to be getting on his back.
I was horrified, in ways, when I realised a custodial sentence was likely to be handed out. But as my mate said: "Fraud is fraud. You can go to prison for embezzlement, so you can go to prison for spot-fixing". An example has been made. Hopefully anyone thinking about spot-fixing will think again.
I'm not happy about it, I can't imagine they'll be getting on too well at the minute. The militant glee on here about it all didn't rest well with me, but each to their own (Draconian views).

Not even that ... just third hand rumour and murmur. Maybe the definition of hearsay needs revisiting?

It was a bit more than that young piefellow. Have thee read the report? Or are you casting into question the credibility of it?

And I can't remember where or when. I might not have said it at all actually, but I definately thought it.

Blimey Red/Tails. I can't believe you went there. Your poor old mate's had a long day, he has a couple of zoots, he makes the rarest of rare errors and you're all over him like a rash - all the time whilst bald-faced lying to him.
You've changed man, changed... you've gone 'all Winchester'
**shakes head**
