Remarkable as well that WI haven't won here since that 1988 series. .
Such was our utter ineptness, if you had told me at the end of that series that WI would then go a quarter of a century without winning a series here i'd have called for the men in white coats.
Then again, a 16 year absence without the Ashes looked equally as unlikely before the 1989 series began

We were all naive.
Whoda thought India would turn out to be qunts?
Or that the Aussies would become the upholders of that game's moral code?
Or that some bloke in 2011 would reinvent opening batting?
Re: England v West Indies, 3rd Test, Edgbaston, 7-11 June, 2012
Yeah, took us until 2004 and Harmison's finest hour to win out there. They were quite crap by then, although Lara was still good for the odd quadruple century.
We really had no right getting those two drawn series in the 90s though. Certainly 1991, can't quite remember how that series unfolded, but most of the great names were still around then. 1995 I remember was Cork's series, was around the time WI handed on the number one status to Australia but they still had more than enough to thrash us potentially.

Headingley 1991 was Gooch's finest hour as a test batsman.

We were quite good at sneaking draws against superior opponents, such as South Africa '98, Zimbabwe '96 etc...

"Kemar Roach has been ruled out of the remainder of West Indies' tour of England with a shin injury and Sunil Narine, the spinner who is uncapped at Test level, has been named as his replacement."
Anyone thinking 2-1?

We actually beat the Yarps in '98, again rather fortunately. The lucky draw was 1994 with the dirt in pocket affair and Malcolm's Match...Brass Monkey wrote:beamer wrote:Yeah, took us until 2004 and Harmison's finest hour to win out there. Sorry, yeah, I meant '94. '98 was even jammier.

Aye! It also probably ranks 4th in my favourite series wins, after '05, '10/11, and '00.
Re: England v West Indies, 3rd Test, Edgbaston, 7-11 June, 2012
I seem to remember some dodgy umpiring and wickets taken with no-balls. Kemar Roach would have done well in those days... also were there any dubious Cronje declarations in that series?

Yeeeeeees!!! Now we'll see if England have really got over their awful winter. Narine is an absolute genius, the only spinner I've seen bamboozle Sachin that much consistently, albeit in a T20 match. No doubt the conditions wont be helpful, but at least it will add another dimension to our attack. Good move to take the safety first approach with Kemar too, he's far too valuable to risk.
Of course, it's all irrelevant because we wont score enough runs to keep him in the game anyway.
Still, my side for the third test then:
Barath/Powell (whoever does best in the warm up)
Fudadin (unless he totally fails against sussex)
Samuels
Bravo
Chanderpaul
Deonarine (much better off spinner than Samuels too)
Ramdin (last chance saloon, he was dreadful in the 2nd test)
Sammy
Rampaul
Best/Edwards (whoever looks in better rythym against Sussex)
Narine

Totally agree with that side. Except I'd probably go with Fidel whether or not Tino outbowls him in the warm up. I was hoping that The selectors would have picked Narine when Roach went down. Though he has been playing 20/20 cricket for 2 months so he needs to get back into the mode of the longer form of the game when people aren't trying(and failing) to smash him around in the IPL. Granted he is averaging 11.88 in FC cricket thus far with 5 5-wicket halls and 2 ten wicket matches in 6 games thus far. So he has shown some ability in the longer form albeit against weak FC competition in the WI.

So Gayle is totally off the test radar then? Would agree with Deonarine, he was better in the series against us than many expected.WIFAN wrote:Brass Monkey wrote:Shitshitshitshitshitshitshit:

Looking forward to seeing Narine. Shillingfood was bland as f*ck. Surely there's something better in the cupboard.

Doesn't look very tall, Deonarine.
Does he have the level of physical development to even hold a bat in two hands?

I expected more from Shillingford. Narine and Deonarine should easily be in the side. Rather see Edwards, from an England point of view... simply because he surely can't do worse than Edwards... is it just me that's thinking this?

Is the next test being played in a lift?

Fidel Edwards is 5' 8"... there have been no good bowlers of that height. Hold on, so's Tino Best. Both shit. Regardless of them both probably being shit.
Re: England v West Indies, 3rd Test, Edgbaston, 7-11 June, 2012
James Harris has been called "too short" on many occasions. The guy is 6 foot.
Give me a break FBers.
In lift terms he's a giant compared to Red.
