Well, it's a little complicated, but I'll see if I can explain it for you.

First, you take all the runs he's scored in all his Tests in India. That's 172.

Then you count up all his completed innings, that is, those where he was out at the end. That's 14.

The you divide the runs by the innings. 172/14=12.2857

FWIW he averages 45 in ODI's v India in India, compared to an overall career average of 44.40.

The Test differential is probably a combination of him being a piss-poor player of spin early in his career and a statistical blip.
