Owais Shah
The way things seem to go for him, I wouldnt be surprised if he sustains a serious injury in the next game the poor chap.

Still got a rubbish technique. A hundred on a flat pitch doesn't change my mind. He'll never make a Test player.

Definitely worth taking to SL. Not bad against the spinners at all.
Even if he is a fidget arse. And I agree with Shasrti - he tries to be too cute at times...

Re: Owais Shah
But it's one-day cricket. Orthodox batting doesn't pay the bills - you've got to do some silly stuff.
Augustus seems to think Shah plays FC cricket the same way.
Not sure you'll average 70+ for the season looking to flip length balls on off-stump over your shoulder for four all the time...

True enough...
Shah's showing in the 1st test v WI this summer one of the big dissapointments for me. Looked petrified - the complete opposite to the ultra cocky bloke that made his debut

Saw him at Trent Bridge this season in a FC match. Same old hard hands. Good player of spin, poor player of swing and seam. Averaging 70+ in Div Two is hardly a claim to fame.

Re: Owais Shah
I thought he'd just totally misread the conditions - came out all guns blazing, looking to make a statement only to find the ball seaming and zipping all over the place.
Before he knew where he was he was back in the hutch.

Except he's done it regularly in Div 1 too I believe

Re: Owais Shah
It's to his credit that he hasn't kicked up a major fuss over the lack of due credit he should have got in the past.
Maybe, just like all of us, there's a little part of him that likes being treated like a whore.

I'd always play him in ODIs.
Very happy for the lad today, and his lovely parents who I met at Southgate.

Easily done I guess - knowing that you're booted out the next match to make way for the England captain!
What kind of "run" is that in the side?
Thanks for stepping in, now sod off you're not needed ...
His effort towards England's win in Bombay 2 years ago long forgotten - a legacy of the fixed mind-set (which brilliantly included Piles in the 1st two Ashes Tests last year) of the failing Duncan Feltcher.
Shah's hundred today (albeit on a flat wicket) was worthy of the same accolades (and MoM award) poured on Tendulkar for his 90 ... and to hear Hussain and Shastri mince on about Shah being "cute" whilst KP was regarded as 'attacking' (when both were attempting the same drag-sweep shot across the line to Powar and Chawla) was irritating, to say the least.
Give the guy an even break .....

Re: Owais Shah
Ever get the feeling a bloke isn't well liked?
When Bright Eyes and Cookie scored hundreds in this series, all the talk was about their innings.
When Bopara carried England home last week with 40-odd, he was "the future of English cricket".
Ace's hundred today brought this effusive praise from his captain: "...the way we fought back in the first innings - a young guy like Luke Wright to come in with a swashbuckling 50 to change the momentum - made it a great effort to get up to more than 300."

Re: Owais Shah
I would love to read or hear an account- heck even speculative- on precisely what this fellow is supposed to have done, or not done, to get this treatment. Can't recall, but wasn't Fletcher apparently quite down on Shah?
Does Shah - to paraphrase a forummer from a different context- habitually offer to sleep with the wives/girlfriends/mothers of everyone connected to the English cricketing establishment everytime he meets them?
Would love to know. Dunno why some journo doesn't pick on it.

Chaps: be happy, the form of Shah and some of the younger players in the squad makes Joyce and Loye seem like a bad dream.

Aye.
All in all an ordinary summer for the national side may prove to be a blessing in disguise.
We've seen quite a few younger players emerge as a result of endless injuries

Re: Owais Shah
Seems like, as England tail off towards another ODI series defeat, the only ray of comfort this summer has to offer is the discovery or development of a few players.
Bopara and Broad have continued to look good prospects. Shah and Tremlett have looked a little more at ease with international cricket than in their previous outings over they years.
And Ryan Sidebottom's come from nowhere to look a reasonble back-up bowler.
Jury's well out on Luke Wright. Like to see him have a bowl in the next match.

Re: Owais Shah
Would like to see Prior put bat to ball as well! I doubt if his place is in any imminent danger in the test side, but most of the England qualified keepers currently playing could have done at least as well as him in these ODIs.

Cook too needs to resume his old ways and get runs.Basil wrote:Would like to see Prior put bat to ball as well! I doubt if his place is in any imminent danger in the test side, but most of the England qualified keepers currently playing could have done at least as well as him in these ODIs.
Last twice - both on good batting tracks - he's been snaffled for zip.... and all you have to do is compare India's opening partnerships lately to those of England's to see why we've lost momentum lately.
A decent 50 to 70 run foundation is essential ... and lately, we ain't been getting close!
Prior' has never convinced me that he's a capable opener in ODI's.
However, whilst the regulars are out, perhaps Moores ought to experiment with Wright opening with Cook, followed by Bellend, KP and Shah (NOT Collywobbles) ... then Colly and Prior. That, to me, seems a more sensible balance.... I 'dalso bring back Sideshow Bob for Dimmi at Lord's (swinging ball).

Re: Owais Shah
Reckon Shah's was the best ton this JAMODI series. Came in with sh!t flying all around him and had to consolidate and accelerate at the right time. He's all class, that 'hard hands' bullsh!t is exactly that, bullsh!t. He's averaged mid-50s for the last 3 or 4 seasons and has a range of shots suited to alot of conditions. He needs to be in there. He'd give the Test side a bit more about them IMO.
Re: Owais Shah
Think he was lucky that Wright really got stuck in, helped take a lot of pressure off him after the Pietersen idiocy.
Pietersen being the idiot, of course.

In that case tac, any single Aus player is lucky in every single match.
