Re: Square Leg Umpire
I still think there is a future problem lurking in the laws as they are written, even if they are interpreted correctly.
If, for example, the last ball in that match had gone like this:
"It's the last ball, scores are tied, one run to win. Taylor is facing, Anderson is at the non-striker's end. Here's the ball now, full, straight, hits him on the pad, it runs away, there's an appeal, the batsmen run, the umpire considers for a moment and now gives him out, out lbw ... almost simutaneously the ball comes in and hits the stumps as Anderson runs through. There's an appeal for a runout now, too."
THE REVIEW: There's a deviation as the ball passes the bat, hotspot shows a clear nick, so that's not out lbw.
Who here believes that the law as it exists, which deems the ball dead at the time of the lbw decision, should prevent the batsman (who has actually hit the ball) from attempting the winning run? Is the game tied; more importantly SHOULD this game be tied regardless of the success of the later runout attempt?
What are your thoughts embee, aside from the letter of the law, which I believe would have my scenario finishing as a draw, with the ball declared dead immediately after the lbw decision IF the law were interpreted correctly by the officiating umpire?
