Now that's a nasty drop
3rd man dies from dodgy home brew
"A third man has died after drinking a botched batch of home-brewed grappa.
Vincent Summers, 21, died in Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital on Tuesday evening.
He was hospitalised after consuming the home-made batch of the Italian spirit on Saturday night with friends Joel Lynam, Joshua Lynam and Bryan Wilmot in the southern Queensland town of Ballandean.
Joel Lynam, 21, died at the Ballandean property on Sunday from suspected methanol poisoning.
Mr Wilmot, 30, was rushed to Toowoomba Hospital in a critical condition, but died late on Monday after his life support was turned off.
The sole survivor Joshua Lynam, 26, remains in a serious condition at the Princess Alexandra Hospital.
Sources said the home-made grappa might have been laced with antifreeze, which typically contains the highly toxic, but sweet-tasting chemical ethylene glycol.
Victims of ethylene glycol poisoning commonly appear intoxicated before developing more serious symptoms including convulsions."

That's one nasty home brew ingredient.
RIP to the poor silly buggers.

Re: Now that's a nasty drop
What a terrible story.
This is a not in frequent occurrence in Eastern Europe and impoverished central American countries ... whether it's methanol or ethylene glycol that's done the damage, there's clearly been some serious miscalculation of chemistry and fermentation processes.
Take great care with 'absinthe' or 'tequila' of dubious provenance.
Of interest, the antidote to poisoning with methanol or ethylene glycol is .... ethanol, by infusion.

Re: Now that's a nasty drop
Cascade is a very fine drop, as you know ... the old style Cascade Green (Pale Ale) was the best. Certainly Cascade should not be mentioned in the same breath as the other concoctions you listed, Southwark, VB, or Swan.
These days of course I mostly drink Boags as it is also very good and I would be lynched if seen drinking the southern preparation. Perhaps in another generation it might be acceptable, but not yet.

I saw that the other day; it seems very unlikely that crocodile bile had anything to do with it. Chemical contamination again.

Re: Now that's a nasty drop
My littlest bro was lauding Corona (with the obligitory slice of lime FFS) over the Xmas hols. I gave it a go, but I'm sorry - it's farkin awful stuff. Weak and largely tasteless - no wonder they put the lime in the top of the bottle.
