Compromising pics of the selectors XI
So what's your XI of players who performed terribly in international cricket, yet somehow always managed to get picked in international squads undeservedly?

Shane Watson
Faisal Iqbal
Martin Guptill
Mohammad Ashraful
Jehan Mubarak
Kamran Akmal+
Gareth Batty
Khaled Mahmud
Jade Dernbach (captain, coach, bus driver, masseuse, tattoo artist)

Re: Compromising pics of the selectors XI
There's a few worthy inclusions there.
Chetan Chauhan?
Ray Bright, selected so often for tours on flimsy grounds? Most notably chosen over Bruce Yardley in 1981.
A host of NZedders, particularly Blair Pocock, Matthew Bell?
Ian Seib of Queensland?
Perhaps you just never Trevved them?

Re: Compromising pics of the selectors XI
The Bangladeshis are a case of "who else is there" to an extent, they stuck with them in the hope they would come good, just like a few other generations.
The batting line-up could play a decent JAMODI innings on its day. The bowling couldn't defend 450 on the other hand. In a T20I that is!
Just think though, a couple of months ago we might have been nominating Ian Bell for this team...

'We'?
Only the haters. Clearly Man Of The Series.
Whoever it was the other day saying 'as useless as a chocolate fireguard' ... have you seen the resilience of Malteasers to the heat in the kitchen in recent times?

Re: Compromising pics of the selectors XI
I almost forgot Adrian Shankar, the Worcs 'fake' player who managed to talk and forge his way into a couple of County contracts!
Granted he never played at international level, but still worth an honorary mention.

Re: Compromising pics of the selectors XI
I don't see how Watson fits in with some of those other names. He'd walk into the England team - averaging 35 with the bat and 31 with the ball in a struggling team in Tests. Plus he's one of the top ODI players in the world - average of 41, s/r 88 and a bowling average under 29.
Some of the more dubious selections I can think of are Mike Brearley (as a batsman), Darren Pattinson, Steve Smith (picked as a frontline spinner last Ashes),

Re: Compromising pics of the selectors XI
It's more over a period of time rather than a one-off game. In his last 20 tests, Watson averages mid 20s with the bat and around 50 with the ball. And he's batted in the top three for the majority of that time.Gary 111 wrote:I don't see how Watson fits in with some of those other names. Re: Compromising pics of the selectors XI
The Roofer only got one Test, I guess we're really looking for crap players who got picked and recalled time after time.
Puke Shite's been hard to shift from the picture, though he's just about acceptable as a T20 specialist. Woakes could become a candidate soon. Bresnan, well, he proved his worth to an extent at Durham but the selectors have been rather generous to him over the years. Bairstow's also knocking on the door of this XI at the moment.

Re: Compromising pics of the selectors XI
I still think if he was available to England we'd pick him, so surely he should be able to get him into the Aus team. Who've they got who is better than him? mid 20s is still better than Hughes, Khawaja most of this series.

Re: Compromising pics of the selectors XI
Yeah, I don;t think you can choose a one-off left field selectorial brain fade ... what we're looking for here is blind selectorial faith and reward in the face of sustained evidence of ineptitude. If Bryce McGain had been selected for a whole series of Tests and continued to perform as he did on his debut ... you get the picture.
Khaled Mahmud exemplifies the type. Sherwin Campbell could be in with a shout. Daren Ganga. Floyd Reifer. Alan 'Froggy' Thomson.

Re: Compromising pics of the selectors XI
Ian Salisbury? Although he did have a decent county record.
Re: Compromising pics of the selectors XI
I was going to say he only played a handful of Tests, but having checked... we actually picked him 15 times. For 20 wickets @ 77. Has to be one of the first names on the teamsheet!Gary 111 wrote:Ian Salisbury? Although he did have a decent county record.

Quite a few English spinners could be considered worthy of a spot, it seems.

Re: Compromising pics of the selectors XI
Just about any we picked from 1985 to 2005 really... though Salisbury's record is hard to beat, the more I read the more remarkable it becomes. His 15 match Test career lasted eight and a half years from first to last appearance. I'd blocked all but about three matches out of the memory to be honest...

On that basis of the odd Test we could have Amjad Khan, FFS Lewis, Chris Scofield, Martin McCague, Saj, ... the list is legion.
