Windies selectors have done it again
A training squad for the Australia series has been selected. It is missing the 4 players currently in the IPL in Bravo, Gayle, Shiv and Sarwan. Those players will return to the Caribbean 4 days before the 1st test.
Sulieman Benn, Patrick Browne, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Fidel Edwards, Ryan Hinds, Amit Jaggernauth, Runako Morton, Darren Sammy, Marlon Samuels, Devon Smith, Brenton Parchment, William Perkins, Keiron Pollard, Daren Powell, Denesh Ramdin, Kemar Roach, Jerome Taylor.[b]
What the heck is going on?
Kieron Pollard - 20 year old slogger who has had an extremely dissapointing second season after dominating in his first. Is he really a test match candidate at this stage?
William Perkins - 21 year old opening batsman who has dominated 20-20 cricket but failed miserably at everything else. Is clearly talented but is definitely not test match material.
Brenton Parchment - Failed miserably in SA, then continued to fail in our FC competition. So what the hell is he doing in a training squad?
The only good selection is Kemar Roach, who is an exciting 20 year old tearaway pacer. Clearly they are looking to see if he has improved enough to replace Darren Powell.

So who are the guys that are succeeding, that you would place in the squad in their place?

Re: Windies selectors have done it again
There are a number of candidates who have far better records and have performed a hell of a lot better this year.
Narsingh Deonarine, Leon Johnson and Xavier Marshall have all outperformed those 3. Heck, even Brendan Nash averaged 50 this year and scored a match winning hundred in the final.
Its not just these 3 though, its an idiotic policy that Gordon Greenidge has come up with that he can assess talent better than anyone else and that stats and performance don't matter at all. It is this policy that has left us with Dwayne Smith playing so many matches for West Indies, Fidel Edwards playing after 1 FC match etc.
It is also this policy that has made them select pacer after pacer instead of giving the spinners, our most successful bowlers, a chance.

Did he not recently make a quote to that effect while selecting Perkins?

Yep your right. I'm trying to find it but have failed so far.
Perkins is talented there is no doubt, but the man panics and gets out whenever he reaches 25 runs or more. That is not exactly ideal for test cricket.

That's alright, Greenidge can always come in to bat when Perkins panics.

Just looked at Perkins' stats- 5 fc matches, a highest score of 52 and an average of 24. Hmm. I know he's very young, but surely Adrian Barath would have been a better pick than this guy?

I'm pretty damn excited to get a look at Kemar Roach. Heard good things.

It's not the first time selectors placed faith in brainless sloggers and non-hopers in tests? Selections like Philo Wallace and Sherwin Campbell come to mind.....

Aye, think he was a little crabbier. Got a useful ton versus England then faded into obscurity.
Re: Windies selectors have done it again
Sherwin Campbell was a pretty solid opening bat for the Windies in the 90's. Faded away badly at the start of the new millenium, however.

Re: Windies selectors have done it again
Yeah Campbell was not that bad and not actually a slogger, he was just a technically flawed batsman who got found out in the end.
I am hoping that those 3 have only been selected for the experience of training with the senior team etc.
Btw Nath, I understand that Nash making our senior team would be a matter of great hilarity to all Aussies, but I guarantee he is more likely to succeed than Pollard or Perkins as he is able to play a reasonable forward defensive if nothing else.

Re: Windies selectors have done it again
Right, just heard an interview with selector Andy Roberts, who made some interesting points.
1) Perkins and Pollard were selected for the training camp to give them end of season experience rather than as realistic test options.
2) He acknowledged that BCL didn't use the spinners properly when they were selected, and that Gayle did not make best use of Rawl Lewis (not sure Lewis has a best use tbh).
3) Another young pacer, Jason Dawes, would have been selected for the training camp if he was not injured as he was very impressive against the Sri Lankans and in the Under 19 World Cup.
4) He didn't really answer a question about Brendan Nash and whether they will consider him for selection. He changed the subject fairly quickly.

I think Rawl plug is the Yank term for an Expandit (used for screwing things into concrete/brick walls). That seems vaguely suitable . . .WIFAN wrote:Right, just heard an interview with selector Andy Roberts, who made some interesting points.

Rawl plug is commonly used in Aus as well. It's certainly what I call 'em.
