best and worst bats with the tail ?
There are some bats who really shone when batting with the tail. Others may not have.
Dujon, AB, Botham, Gilchrist stick out for some reason.
Others would lose their heads.
Thoughts?

For me the batsman takes the responsibility for scoring the bulk of the runs and taking the bulk of the strike

I remember Asif Iqbal at Perth in 1978/79. He dominated the strike in a last wicket partnership which finally ended when Alan Hurst mankadded Sikander Bakht. When Australia batted, Sarfraz successfully appealed for handled the ball against Andrew Hilditch.
A lot of ill-feeling during that match.

Asif Iqbal was phenomenal....held half the world all-time 9th wicket record (Intikhab Alam was the other half) for about 20 years, and held up Australia for the 10th for 90 minutes plus at least twice, once effectively saving the match (Adel 76-77 when Thommo did his shoulder)

The stannies had a good team in those days. Iqbal was tough. Hussey was pretty useful.

The other Asif Iqbal marathon I remember was with Iqbal Qasim, I think. Memories deceive but I remember it as (proportionately) a 96/4 century partnership, or thereabouts. Very frustrating, anyway.
Tough bastard. An Indian, playing for Pakistan. From Hyderabad maybe?

Re: best and worst bats with the tail ?
His name very rarely crops up when discussing the best all-rounders of the era, but his numbers were up there. He averaged under 30 with the ball, and well over 30 with the bat; the usual criteria used to judge a good all-rounder. And he was outstanding batting with the tail.
I think he and Majid Khan both debuted for Pakistan as opening bowlers, batting at 9 or 10, and only developing their batting later.

At the end of his career Chanderpaul was quite bad when batting with the traditional tail. But given West Indies' tail often started at 3, he was pretty good.

I remember that partnership like it was yesterday, in this match. Asif Iqbal and Iqbal Qasim held Aus up for 90-odd minutes, adding 87 for the final wicket in their 2nd innings to give Pak a lead of 284. It was a masterly strike farming effort by Asif. It took a run out to end the Wacky innings. I then watched Fat Waddling Cosier and Rod Marsh block out ball after ball after the 6th wicket fell chasing 285. After cruising at 3-201 we lost 3 quick wickets and the two above shut up shop when an easy win seemed inevitable. We fell 24 runs short after the 2 crabs spent the final 70 minutes adding a paltry 33, when 57 was needed.

Asif was a delight to watch - all wrists and placement.

Re: best and worst bats with the tail ?
Might be failing memory but I recollect Ken Barrington as being a great bat with the tail and Alan Lamb

The scorecard highlights another monumental event that occurred in the same game, although I had not made the connection. Thommo did not complete an over in Pakistan's first innings, and failed to bowl in the second. Note Allan Turner opening ...
This was a summer I spent in Perth with my family. It was great getting up at 6, enjoying a quick swim for 1-2 hours, then going back to watch the Tests starting at 8 am. Good times.
