For decades all the Bills could show was Peter Burge, Don Tallon, Wally Grout and the admittedly unlucky Trimble (snr).

When it came to the Shield there was that wonderful tradition of your mob being unable to ever win one. Season after season the Chips would lead or near lead the ladder prior to xmas and then fall in a hole. I blame the Jellybacks for the end of the great era of perennial chippiness.

The reason for the post Xmas collapse is the same reason the Superbowl is played at a neutral venue. No-one wanted to play Green Bay at home in late January. The shield draw was rigged because Mexican administrators didn't want to send their pampered,pretty boys to play on post Xmas juiced up Gabba pitches in suffocating heat and humidity.

That said Conway, I shall take your advice and enjoy what would appear to be a decent match. I'll just pretend it's Warwickshire v Surrey.

A Cricket Australia spokesperson said: "There are no provisions for match officials to review on field decisions for the JLT Sheffield Shield in the Cricket Australia Playing Conditions.

"This incident will be followed up in Cricket Australia's general match review process and feedback will of course be taken on board."

The options available to the third umpire are listed in Appendix D of the 2018-19 JLT Sheffield Shield Playing Conditions.

They include processes for ruling on run outs, stumpings and hit-wicket decisions, fair catches, and boundary line issues (eg, whether a fielder gathered a ball cleanly before contacting the rope).

The third umpire can also be called into action if there's any appeal for obstructing the field, or to adjudicate on which batter is out if they are both at the same end during a run out.

There is no third umpire for Shield matches during the regular season, which are live streamed on cricket.com.au and do not feature cameras side-on to the pitch that can help adjudicate on no balls and run outs.

Seb Gotch - 387 runs in 18-19 at 32.25. He was hardly gonna bat himself to a MoM in the Final. Viles might have had a case to whinge if it had've been Harris.

Then there were all the 'imports' - big name small numbers crowd-suckers on working holidays like Beefy, Viv, Hick etc, often batting in front of the highly-rated local youngster to keep the Test selectors minding their own goddam, even batting Hayden at no 5 for a while.

Thanks Fred. Had forgotten about all those efforts by the Chips to buy a Shield. They also spent big time on imports from other States.

How did the two biggest states manage to come third so often hack when the comp was just them and the closest pub team to the border.

Wow. That just reminds me of my good fortune in no longer residing in Chip Central. The number of headaches I copped as a result of attempting rational chat with locals was amazing. 

Whether it was about sport, politics, crazy home birthers, Joh Bjelke-P, corruption in public life or the private sector, keeping Aboriginals in their place, guns - discussion with many of the locals was complete folly. If it was Queensland, it was ok. Everyone is against Queensland was just a given.
