Bangladesh v Afghanistan, Only Test, Chittagong, 5-9 September, 2019
Blocker gets a Test
Paul Wilson appointed to stand in first Test match as an umpire
August 27, 2019
Cricket Australia (CA) congratulates Paul Wilson after the International Cricket Council confirmed he would stand in his first Test match as an umpire.
Wilson, who has stood in 28 One-Day International matches and 11 Twenty20 Internationals, will oversee the one-off Bangladesh-Afghanistan Test match beginning on September 5 in Chittagong.
He will become Australia’s 90th Test umpire and the 484th person to umpire a Test match internationally.
Wilson, then a fast bowler, also represented Australia in a Test match against India in Kolkata in 1998.
"The past 21 years since that match in Kolkata have gone by very fast," Wilson said.
"I'm looking forward to getting out there and enjoying some quality red ball cricket. Test matches are the pinnacle of our game and it is a privilege to be joining a select group of people to have officiated at this level.
"It is also a great thrill to join Paul Reiffel as one of a handful of people to have played and now umpire at Test level."
CA Match Officials Manager Sean Easey applauded Wilson’s achievement.
“An appointment to Test cricket is the pinnacle of the umpiring pathway and reaching this level is a true credit to Paul and his efforts over many, many years,” Easey said
“He is committed to the team, prepares diligently, is respected by colleagues and stakeholders, and he continuously gives to the game both on and off the field."
Wilson will stand alongside on-field partner Nigel Llong, third umpire Nitin Menon and match referee Chris Broad in the fixture.

Will this duel become as legendary as the other local derby played at a similar sounding centre = the bitterly fought match between Mittagong and Bowral at Mittagong Oval in Mittagong, in the Highlands District Cricket Association??
The Highlands District Cricket Association is notable for having the world's most famous 3rd grade player in former Test Umpire Simon Taufel, who runs around for the Bowral Cavaliers.
Oh and a couple of useful former players came from that Association - Don Bradman and Bill O'Reilly.

So who are the Australians to have played and umpired in Tests. I can think of:
C Bannerman
Pistol
ARthur Richardson
and now Blocker.
There must be more.

George Coulthard also played & umpired tests for Australia.
I would think Australia's most famous umpire was Edmund Barton but he only officiated in First Class matches, not in tests.

As an umpire? Don't think so, Q. Gregory was never a Test umpire, but did umpire a FC game in 1892.

Chattogram is the Bangladeshi name for Chittagong. Bit like Bombay and Mumbai.

Trying to find a comprehensive list of English Test player-umpires... from one article have found Mark Benson, John Hampshire, Peter Willey, and from the first ever Test, James Lillywhite. Then Richard Illingworth from the current crop.
