AFL - 2020 Season
Currently watching the AFL Bushfire fundraiser between Victoria and a composite of other States.
Great fun. Terrific skills and movement from both teams. Footy as it can be played.

Re: AFL - 2020 Season
What I think it shows is that there are too many teams in the AFL with the talent diluted somewhat. Put all the stars together though and it is so slick. Thought a few had claims to be BOG ahead of Dusty.

Aye. Home town decision? Thought Green was bog. Not that it matters.
Your point about the dilution of talent is spot on. They should revert to a 16 team comp. Abolish GoCo and merge Carlton and Norf and send them to Tasmania. There are far too many Melbourne based teams.
The problem is the broadcasters like lots of teams and would be pi55ed off with having one less game to broadcast.
Another option is to have a relegation/promotion system for Melbourne based teams, dropping the the two lowest on the ladder Melbourne based teams in say 2021 to a lower rung comp - a reconstituted VFL. In 2022 the bottom placed Melbourne team would be relegated and the Premier of the of the reconstituted VFL would be promoted.
This model would generate public and media interest in the VFL comp.

Re: AFL - 2020 Season
The broadcaster does indeed like a lot of teams and it allows them to pay more for the tv rights. It's a disaster that they're thinking of two more teams for the future - Tasmania, and possibly another one from WA.

Re: AFL - 2020 Season
Looking forward to the season proper.
Teams likely to prosper/rise: Brisbane*, Dogs, GWS, Sydney.
Teams likely to slide; Hawks, Tigers, Essendon, Port.
Brisbane are my early favourites for a flag. We’ll see if I’m as ‘good’ a curse as JGK.

Because it's been so long since the Big V has played an official match, they probably wanted to keep up the tradition of awarding medals. They didn't call it the E.J. Whitten medal though.
It will be the highest standard match we'll see sandwiched in between the AFLW encounters and the Marsh community series.
Think GWS looks the most talented team. Brisbane may find it a tad tougher this year with a harder draw. Last year they had a soda draw and a charmed run with injuries. If the latter occurs again they may be in with a shot.
Bombers may fall. Dees, Aints and Dogs should improve. The last two named have recruited well.

hell no. AFL is barely registering much of an interest these days.

You have cursed it - there won't be a premier this year.

That was a spin out. AFL is a crap sport on TV at the best of times. Take out the atmosphere and it is painful.

Collingwood win AND for some reason I didn't tip them in a non-Geelong game.

Really enjoyed the Umps efforts in gifting the Pies. Six of Caltons first 10 goals the night before were from frees on the season opener. Bowden has taken over coaching of the the Umps.lardbucket wrote:Collingwood win AND for some reason I didn't tip them in a non-Geelong game.

Re: AFL - 2020 Season
Very happy with the Swans win yesterday.
The travel arrangements involved bus to the airport, chartered flight and renting the whole floor of an Adelaide hotel.
Watching the game with no crowd was interesting. It was terrific to hear the players' chat.

Dogs got gifted frees and very marginal fifty metre penalties too.
Anyway it looks like the AFL will close down because SLO MO is shutting down non-essential travel, whatever that means.
The irony is of course that Slo Mo could have prevented a lot of this had he shut down the borders early. As it ten recent yankie tourists tested positive last night in SA.
But while schools remain open with no hope of controlling social distancing, the messages remain mixed. He is endangering the lives of staff etc. for economic reasons while the AFL gets criticised for playing for economic reasons.

Looks like with the state borders being close the season is stuffed.

Re: AFL - 2020 Season
In a phone hook-up of club officials, the AFL said no matches would be played before June, but it is known that that timeframe could be significantly pushed back.
There remains, though, a commitment to somehow play the remaining 144 matches of the 2020 season, which was last week reduced to a 17-game-per-team fixture.
