Re: Ashes Series 2021-22
I can’t see him being left out unless he’s injured, opts out or has a very poor summer season. It’s just not the sort of decision our selectors would make.
His record isn’t great in Australia, but it’s also hard to see where we’re going to find a bunch of bowlers who will be more effective there. Certainly not Woakes and Curran... perhaps Archer, Wood and Stone, but only one of them is ever fit to play at any given time! Jimmy still picks himself, probably, and I expect they will lean on experience in the absence of a lot of obvious alternatives.

A fit Archer and Wood, along with Jimmeh may trouble the fragile Aus top order.

I'd like to see Broad and Anderson bowling together with the pinky at Adelaide (assuming we're having a d/n test).

Nothing official JGK but I had some advice from a Gabba Corporate contact that the match would be played 8-12 December. We'll see if that turns out ... hope so, as I've organised time off work to coincide.

I'm trying to work out when to take summer holidays (ideally to NZ if the border is open) but the SCG test had changed dates so ofter over the last few years it is hard to know.

Sounds like crisis talks could be in the pipeline at the ECB, with some players reluctant to travel if families are not allowed.
Could we have a depleted England team or even a postponed/cancelled series?

Re: Ashes Series 2021-22
This fooking chinese plague could still affect the Ashes, at least in Sydney.
It appears Sydney has still not reached the peak of the current Delta strain outbreak.
One would hope that 5 months (until the time of the usual early January Sydney Test) would be more than enough to get my city clear of the disease, but as we've seen, it only takes one idiot unvaccinated limo driver to set off another lockdown.

Best guess at this stage:
Burns (or AN Other county form pick)
Sibley (as above)
hopefully oz bowlers will have a hernia watching this duo hop about the crease
Crawley (could also open, but then we need to find another #3 - if the top three all perform poorly it could be three new/recycled names anyway!)
the trouble is all our best batters are in the odi squads where they learn to slog and forget how
to defend.
i'd suggest malan but hes been t20ed to death and is apparently suspect vs spin.
Root* (a certainty at last, injury permitting)
Stokes (too high? Well, there’s not too many banging the door down to bat above him.)
injuries and streetfights permitting
Pope/Lawrence (both need a good summer to cement places, and not to be hung out to dry at number 3)
Pope is good for 20-29 seems to struggle to get past this recently.
Buttler+ (batting X-factor will get him the nod over Foakes, away from the subcontinent)
rather bairstow, as Foakes is out for the entire season. wont have any cricket at all.
Archer (long tail, I know, but can only see first-choice attack in Australia being him and...)
i expect archer to play 1 or 2 tests and then be out injured.
Leach was very dissapointing on turning wkts in india, but could have a role as no3 or specialist nighty, cos we will certainly need one quite regularly with our top 3
Broad
Anderson
oh great a combined age of 80+ even if they have 1100 wkts, and how successful has this combo
been in oz before?
I think yobbo robbo has to be a cert, hes a tough nut clearly and should feel right at home in oz.
Rest of the squad - Wood and Stone will go, if fit, for pace options. Foakes obviously as backup keeper. Woakes as “balance of the side” option. And a top order batting cover and backup spinner (definitely up for grabs).
woakes is massively ineffective in away tests. Stone would be def cert, but hes even more injury prone
than Wood.
its not original but england team has more holes than swiss cheese.
1 question for oz - is it def that paine will continue as cap? he didnt have a great time as either
cap or keeper last season.

Hmm, this is a real threat to the series.
CA will put the team in a 5 star hotel for 2 weeks and all will be fine initially. It's moving between cities which will be the problem.

Re: Ashes Series 2021-22
If it’s not feasible then so be it, cancel it. We wouldn’t put up much of a fight with the best team available, never mind a scratch team of players prepared to put up with it.
These players are not robots (they’d have a bit more judgement outside off stump for a start if they were!) and have spent a large part of the past year shut away from society and even their own families in order to meet commitments to TV and sponsors, effectively. We’re already seeing the consequences with the Stokes situation. Even many years before Covid, we saw it with Trescothick, Harmison, Thorpe… there’s always a breaking point, and we’re heading towards a really tragic outcome involving a top international player at some point if we carry on this way.
The “get on with it, you’re professional sportsmen” defence has to have its limits.
