Certainly doesn't fit with his well crafted image. Silly boy.
Sad end to a useful career for Aus.
So Carey will now bolster the batting? And 2nd to become skipper?

Carey could be drafted in to do both.

Good timing… not sure it’s going to change much in terms of the Ashes outcome but certainly throws a bit of uncertainty into the Aussie camp. At least they haven’t gone back to Smith to replace another “disgraced” captain.
Having a fast bowler as captain is always a gamble/last resort so will be interesting to see if that works out.

would be the 1st keeper to captain on Test debut since Lee Germon?

Interesting that she would later complain. Seems like she was a party to the whole game.
Still, very silly thing for Paine to do.

How many have captained on debut, other than for new Test nations? Have any lasted the course?Nath wrote:JGK wrote:skully wrote:Certainly doesn't fit with his well crafted image. Silly boy.

The idea of bringing in a captain from outside the current squad (not necessarily uncapped) does tend to come up on occasions when a vacancy arises with no obvious heir apparent. It’s very rare that it actually happens though (Chris Cowdrey is the other one I remember, in the Summer of the Four Captains, and I think he lasted one match, got injured and was quickly cast aside for a Gooch/Gower return and never reappeared for England). Given the coaching regimes, split formats etc. these days I guess Test captain isn’t the all-encompassing role it used to be, and you probably just pick your best XI (or squad of 16 or whatever) and choose a captain from within it, like football or rugby.

As for specialist fast bowler captains in the past… Willis, Walsh, Waqar I think. Any others? Don’t think Noddy quite counts, he topped the all-rounder rankings at one point I believe.

To answer Nath’s question, and my own, regarding debutant captains…
Germon is the only player (keeper or otherwise) to captain on Test debut since 1972 (Tony Lewis FFS), other than captains of countries in their first ever Test. Even South Africa on return from isolation didn’t field a debutant captain, as Kepler Wessels had of course previously appeared for Australia.
34 have done it in history (12 of which were obviously their respective countries’ debut Tests). Only four examples since WW2 excluding debutant nations (Germon, Lewis, George Mann and Nigel Howard).

Not amazing at all. Perfect timing for English tabloids and Dubber press.

Re: Tim Paine resigns as Captain
So Ima caught short of a length and pulls stumps.
Departs with a horrific record as captain - notably losing 2 home series v BanIndia.
Average keeper with a limited left side.
Will not be missed. Probably surpasses Smith as a dud skipper. Smith at least got some reviews right.
The true scandal in this is the stupidity of Cricket Oz and Cricket Tas. The constant selling of Ima's 'good guy' character was nauseating anyway. Knowing there was this little pile of poo in the background and persisting with the values line.

Handscomb is by far the best Skipper in Shield cricket. He has led average Vix teams to sustained success.
IMO it is a great pity he gave up the gloves when establishing himself in the Vic team. This decision was arguably a result of Ima forcing Wade from Tas to Vic. Not without irony.
Am amazed Ima still thinks he should be playing Test cricket. He must be snorting all the Colonel's herbs and spices.
Speaking of the Colonel I expect Jo the Cameraman and the film crews will be on big bucks this weekend reshooting all the Ch 7 promo and KFC ads etc.

Still no logical explanation to why it has come to the surface, after first appearing in 2017.
As for Ima , if the selectors say his the best keeper in the country, well all I can say is Australia is farked.

As I’ve always said, it’s just a fielding position, unless you’re keeping to spinners on Asian minefields I suppose. Doesn’t feel like any reason to keep him in the side regardless of anything else.Blackadder wrote:Still no logical explanation to why it has come to the surface, after first appearing in 2017.

Agree it's ironic that CA installed Paine as the leader to mitigate the effects of he sandpaper scandal knowing his own scandal would emerge within years.

Journos have known about it for years. The lady in question finally found one low-brow enough to run with it. Not surprisingly, he works for Hun.

Not as lowlife as the woman who sold him the story after initiating the text sequence, pursuing Paine, stealing from Cricket Tas (sacked for this), breaking into Paine’s car (subject of court case), and finally, this bit only allegedly but from TCA players familiar with the case and scuttlebutt, also having a crack at extorting money from Paine AND CT ... sold the story to gutter inhabitants at the Herald Sun.
