Ray H. Robinson - one very undistinguished Test for Australia in 1936.
Not to be confused with 'Sugar' Ray Robinson, or Raymond Charles Robinson (a singer who dropped his last name to avoid confusion with Sugar), or even the legendary cricket writer (The Wildest Tests)

Ray ‘Sugarchile’ Robinson was an amazing performer, well worth checking out on Ewetube.

And a Footscray then Carlton footballer, with two sons who also played, both in Premiership teams (but whoever handed out their genetics must have got their Bruce Reids mixed up)

Brad Green, same first game for Vic as Merv & Deano (and at the time the highest rated of the three) cf Brad Green, Melbourne footballer laid out in 2000 GF, only Melbourne player to play both that game and Cardigan Park 2011, and apparently* knocked back Man Utd to do so.
(Which reminds me: Dean Jones, who some saw as a bit of a tool at times. was also the name of the actor who played the title role in the naval comedy (apparently*), Ensign O'Toole)

Robert Rose was also a basketballer with SE Melb Magic in the 90s. At about 6 feet 10, he wouldn't concede much height to the two Collingwood Bob Roses (assuming both still fully mobile) standing on each others shoulders.

My other Jon Snow (the British newsreader) is non-fictional, but yours probably trumps him with the correct spelling as per the cricketer…lardbucket wrote:beamer wrote:With apologies for slight spelling variations...

*The cricketing Julius Caesar was a round-arm fast bowler of the mid-19th century, due to unfortunately early birth he's the only non-international in my XI. A bit of a long tail here as well... any alternative/better ones?
Forget the Jon Snow of fiction. The John Snow of early 19th Century England and the cholera map, the saviour of thousands from the consequences of the unsanitary Broad Street pump deserves a guernsey.

Eddie Hemmings was a British fake-rugby commentator as well as Notts and England off-spinner.
Mark Bowen - Notts and Northants seamer, and Welsh footballer and manager.
I know Johnsons, Smiths, Joneses etc. are an easy target, but former Notts captain Paul Johnson doubled as a British journalist and an American DJ.

Re: Famous Namesakes XI
New AFL Hall-of-famer Michael Taylor, longtime SANFL stalwart who also played very well at Collingwood despite late start, classic 'under the radar' man working behind the show-ponies - not unlike that other Mick Taylor, who as Rolling Stones guitarist put up with the antics of Mick 'n Keef for four years while Ronnie W got shot of his Faces contract
'Hang on Fred, which one's the cricketer??' Neither...that would be the almost Test bat who played for Victoria before the SA circus and Tassie afterwards, and banged out runs to the very end but never got the call-up. (Even contemplating a Test team with not one but by then TWO M. Taylors is borderline disrespectful to the memory of one sadly missed forumer)

Re: Famous Namesakes XI
Ian Smith, mentioned on another thread, moonlighted as Neighbours legend Harold Bishop.
Alistair Cooke (double spelling variation…) was a British-American journalist and broadcaster.
Michael Owens appeared for New Zealand a few years before his singular made it big on the football field.

Ian Bishop, aside from being a fearsome if injury-prone WI paceman, was a West Ham United stalwart throughout the ‘90s.

Stevie Wright sang for the Easybeats. When the Sydney Swans weren't much chop in the early 90s Stevie Wright was their captain. When Richmond were even worse a decade later, guess the name of one of their many football head-honchos?
Also unless I'm very much Murray Walker, Steven Wright was also the real name of 'Sandman' from Live & Sweaty, who made Danny from Droop Street sound like Bruce McAvaney on helium.

Then there’s British DJ Steve Wright. Think we had a serial killer by that name as wellFred Nerk wrote:Stevie Wright sang for the Easybeats. The cricketers I’ve found by that name seem pretty obscure though, have I missed an obvious one?
