Lol… Handscomb hit on the helmet … Lehmann led the appeals. Surprised given the umps, he wasn’t given.

Anything else besides the disputed catch ?
Vix called Fraser Berzerker back after he was given on a howler
I saw that one. The ball turned a mile, and he missed it by about a foot …
I remember Khawaja being given out under similar circumstances in an Ashes test: the bowler was Swann. The ball turned from a footmark and he (like Bazooka) missed it

Jesus, it must be a goat track at SCG.
Spivs had a 24 run lead after 1st inns after 2 low 200 totals.
The Dubbers were rolled for 118 in 2nd and Tozzies are 9-67 still needing 76!!!

Spivs win by 74 runs.
Tremain 6-31, Bird 4-22.
Have looked at wickets and ball was jagging.

Re: Sheffield Shield 2023-2024
It seems that in recent years, about 70% of Sheffield Shield games are played in conditions that favour bowlers. I don't think that is an ideal situation to produce Test quality batsmen although some might suggest that making tough runs is a good sign.

Spot on, W.
And shit umpiring hasn't helped either.
Far too many dodgy decisions given in Shield over past few years, sawing off batsmen.

Do you reckon starting the Shield earlier is a factor?
1. Undercooked pitches, yep they are drop in but have less time to settle.
2. Weather is usually less stable in Spring.
3. Not much grade cricket ahead of Shield season.
Still I prefer batsmen are tested on pitches that give bowlers something.

Re: Sheffield Shield 2023-2024
I suspect the states are wanting to win the competition & don't want to risk draws so they are happy to produce wickets that seam all over the place. I don't want games played on roads, just fair wickets that can produce a result in the final session of the 4th day. Not 2 or 3 day games!
Sometimes weather conditions play a part but the aim should be wickets that are fair to both batsmen & bowlers.

Agree about the aim is balance between bat and ballm
The MCG has been a lively pitch but good bats with technique can make runs.
The JO by contrast is being curated to offer spinners aid on days 3 and 4. How well that is done is open to question. The match v Tassie was a road.

Yeah, roads and minefields are no good for the development of our up-and-comers.
Give a little bit of sporting but not too bad.

Re: Sheffield Shield 2023-2024
Historically Qld did well in the early part of the season. Greenish wickets, conducive bowling conditions and starting Grade earlier meant a nightmare first game for the visiting Vics. The miracle draw of 73/74 aside we were routinely flogged

I think this one was as much down to an unexpected storm as it was to an under-prepared drop-in wicket. As inglorious for Tas as their earlier 400+ last day chase was magnificent.
SA v VIC match still ‘live’ but it’s hard to see the WA v QLD match finishing as anything but a draw.

Bird has moved further up the all-time Shield wicket takers list. He’ll likely be top 5 when his career finishes, at an average comparable only to Grimmett’s, with half his career on the Bellerive ‘road’.

Vics got home by 20 odd runs. Bizarre game with some decent performances from a few bowlers, O’Neill had a,pair of Michelles. Wes Agar showed his family has one red ball bowler. Both keepers were tidy and made important runs for their team. Carey made a fine 80 which I guess helps his Test prospects.
Apparently* the Vics are second behind TAS at the moment. Pretty amazing after an inglorious start.

The Wozzie Billy game was still in progress so they didnt update the ladder
Like an AFL game when the winner of a Friday night game jumps up about 5 spots until everyone else playsÂ
Lazy commentary

I think in both cited examples most punters who have basic knowledge of the situation make the necessary adjustments - I can't imagine anybody pining much for the return of the iconic 'Match Ratio' ' column in any case
