Technical Help......again
I often use my PC now and a laptop...can someone please tell me how I can make my documents, pictures etc accessible to both machines?
I'm sure there must be a way.

Start. My Network Places. "Set up a wireless network for a home or small office". Or "Set up a home or small office network" if both computers are connected to your router with cables.

There is....it's FARKIN tricky. You have to network them, i.e. create a home network. If you go into network connections on the start menu, a thingy on the left says "set up a home network". Click on that and it will attempt to "walk you through."
Try it and then message back when it doesn't work.
You need a usb stick drive. You plug it in to your main computer, get Windoze to put the network settings on a file on the drive and then you plug it into the laptop.
You only need to attempt it approx 15 times before it might work. Once you have succeeded it will work for about a day and then for no known reason on Earth you will not be able to gain access to the files and folders on the other computer.
Of course you do have a wireless router don't you?

It's asking me for network name, security type and security key/passphrase
I don't know what that means

Look, you're all supposed to make this easy for me, not confuse me more!
I've got a live box and I think it might be a router.

Well done! You have messaged back rapidly when it very quickly didn't work. See, I was right; that's why I am entrusted with the nation's most dangerous madmen.Demelza wrote:It's asking me for network name, security type and security key/passphrase

You either were meant to set a password in the "walk through" or your basic network on your router will have a password in it's security, either WEP or WPA. You probably have to get into your router settings which should be in the stuff that came when you were connected to broadband. If you have lost it you're semi-farked.
Good stuff this Windoze networking.

Merely an observation I have made based on the relatively limited experience of you activity on FB; although seeing the number of medals you have this would seem to be a good representative sample of your life.Batfink Begins wrote:doctorspin wrote:Well yes, that seems to be your approach to any of life's conundrums and paradoxes.Batfink Begins wrote:Really? Oo err doctor. Didn't realise you were being serious. Think what you will sir.
Re: Technical Help......again
BTW, one of the reasons you need security on your network is to stop a passer-by connecting to your network and signing up to all sorts of illegal porn sites which will look like it is you signing up. Also, if they connect they may be able to get access to the same files you are trying to to make accessible from each PC.

It's true - if you prick me, do I not bleed? if you tickle me, do I not laugh? I'd smell as sweet were I called something else.
Re: Technical Help......again
That was scary. I lost internet connection then for over 5 mins.
Haven't got a clue what I did

What router have you got? That will usually be your 'network name'. It's mad how such a little thing works. All in lower case by the way.

No. I want you all to know that I nurse kittens, then play the harp, then spend the rest of the night helping the disabled and OAPs get across the street safely.

Fark it.
Well, OK. Let me know if you change your mind.
