Well, where I come from, that's what 'basket case' means. And I'm not exactly slagging him off here, just suggesting that he belongs in this exalted company. He was a damn good opener, and could have been even better without the problems or with a bit more support and understanding.

Don't quite understand why Thorpey's getting in. 100 tests, average 45 in an era of great bowling, also an excellent ODI man.

I think whoever put Thorpe's name up was suggesting that Graham didn't enjoy perfect mental health for the entire length of his career. That's my understanding of 'basket case', but it seems there are others.

Did Thorpe have mental problems?
Thought it was just the strain of shagging around too much?

He had depression because he battered his own head in and his wife used his kids as a weapon.
Like jack, he probably listened to this a lot

Re: All Time Test Cricket's XI - Greatest Basketcases...
Perhaps we should filter this down and exclude people who had personal and mental issues get in the way and restrict people who played close to 100 tests and lost focus due to personal issues. So if we take Thorpe, Thres and Slater off and stick to potentials who got their heads stuck in their arses long after some success what XI should we get? People who were hyped and weren't good enough, attitude losers?

What about Klusener? Can he be called a basket case? Was all attitdue, reportedly selfish and he definately underachieved. He had all the markings of a great all-rounder.....

Anyone feels the list can have better candidates can put up a list with their players at correct spots [openers, one drop, wk, all rounder, pacer, spinner etc]

Tim Zoehrer had the talent to be one of the best 'keepers Australia's produced. Don't know exactly what went wrong, but it went wrong very, very badly.

Allegedly thieving from teammates' lockers.
Having read a bit of cricket history, the very talented Sid Barnes probably also deserves a mention here according to his peers.

It was, but some people won't accept that. Apparently Queenslanders are supposed to keep going until they drop dead on the pitch, or they're 'soft'.Brass Monkey wrote:So I've heard, I just thought it was more body problems?tac wrote:Softy McDermott ... had a bit of trouble with the heart strings . . .

In Oldies case, i've heard he was troubled with psychosomatic illness . . . so he might have found it hard to cope with the excitement and stress of test cricket . . . which is a shame. Billy McSofty was just a softy . . . like Big Carl.

Oh right, fair enough. I just remember he was the premier boy when I nearish the start of time I was watching cricket - with the fat wanker anyway. I remember him breaking down in an Ashes Test after bowling with some real fire. Shame Bruce Reid doesn't get the same treatment, because he'd be double soft if that's the case.
Re: All Time Test Cricket's XI - Greatest Basketcases...
Surely the former Windies player Leslie Hylton was cricket's biggest head case? He murdered his wife in 1955.
