I did not know what drift was five years into watching Test cricket.
A fellow 'connoisseur' explained it thusly: It's the spin equivalent of swing.
Good times.

Apparently it's quite a common problem for young leggies. Only the rubbish ones though

Re: Bloody Hell.....
Damned if I know how to bowl a googly at all. I can just about do it, but I have to almost dislocate my shoulder and it usually goes miles down leg of a Harmison magnitude.

Funny now that you mention it, I could bowl googlies too.

Watch a Mushtaq Ahmed video, or even a recent Kumble video. Or you can do what I do and try to release the bowl while sticking out my little finger.

Stick my little finger out? I don't really see how that would work, but I'll give it a go. Thanks.

Stick your little finger out?
How's that supposed to help the googly? As far as I know, the little finger plays no role in any leg-spin deliveries.

So when the batsmen see ya sticking the little finger out, they know it's a googly? How nice of you.

Re: Bloody Hell.....
I can't turn the ball at all. Occasionally I might 'stick the little finger out' in the hope that the batsman might expect something different (ie other than a pie) ... so far no success.
Has anyone noticed whether Hogggyyy!!! sticks his tongue out further on the leggie or the googly, or which direction he sticks it out? Could be a clue to the keeper, or an attempt to baffle the batsman ...

The finger, furry. I wasn't suggesting you cut anything else off . . .
(Yes, I am. Blame the drugs. [whinge] And the fact that I nearly lost half a finger in an industrial accident yesterday arvo. [/whinge]
Time to get out and see if I can drive as far as the local newsagent. I need my daily newspaper and crossword.)

Jeez, you almost lost half a finger? What do you do? Most important, are you ok? Take care.

Re: Bloody Hell.....
Just making sure, furry. I seem to have a reputation as something of a man-hater and wouln't want you to get the wrong idea . . .
Sheer carelessness. Trying to stop something from jamming again and the finger got caught in the feed. Managed to yank it free before it got dragged in too far, so it's not as bad as it would have been if it had been grabbed further down. Just some stitches, and a soon-to-be-missing fingernail, and a fracture, and a day off work followed by two weeks of light duties. Going to be bloody boring at work until I can use the hand properly again, but.
The lengths to which we working class people have to go just to get some time off . . .

Re: Bloody Hell.....
Actually, I was very antisocial until the doc strapped another finger to it to support the fracture.
Thanks. I'll survive (largely due to the painkillers.)
And I also warn everyone here very strongly against ever doing anything that may necessitate needles in a finger. He had to inject the anaesthetic in three separate places around the middle joint of that finger, and that experience was more painful than all the rest of it put together.
Explains why Trev is now after another job, doesn't it?

Start with practising the release only with a tennis ball while you are sitting around at home. Then move on to the last part of the arm swing (moving the arm from 9 o'clock position through to the top) + release. You'll know when it's time to move on from there. Good luck with it.

No, on the few occasions I saw bits if it, I found it silly and cruel rather than amusing.
And, as the last dose of painkillers has worn off and I'm not due another for an hour, my sense of humour is currently on holiday.
