The downside of Magoo's retirement
I've just realised that with no Magoo and Hayden, the 3rd test will be the first test that Australia has ever played where the entire XI was born after I was.
I guess I might have to officially retire as well.

Merv is over there. He used to land his leggie better than Magoo currently is.

For the third Test we'll only have three players with more than 30 Tests to their name.
Last time that happened?

Re: The downside of Magoo's retirement
I thought this thread was going to be like one of those 'Where's Wally' puzzles where we had to find a downside to McDill's retirement.
McGoo's McGone at last!
JGK: SIUUBG. I went through that when AB packed it in.

Re: The downside of Magoo's retirement
Ross, my first guess would be sometime in the late 80s. Maybe 88 before Alderman and Lawson came back.
Bats:
Boon (maybe 25 Tests)
Marsh (his second Test was SW's first, Waugh's breakthru ton came in his 26th Test)
Jones (no more than 20 at that stage, prob closer to a dozen)
AB
Wood (might need to find a team without him in it if numbers get tight)
Waugh (see above)
Any keeper after R Marsh up to and inc Healy
Fast bowlers:
Merv (debuted same game as Marsh)
Reid
McDermott (same series as Boon) or Dodemaide
Spin:
Matthews (4 Tests to start 85-86 season)/Sleep/Taylor

In Heals' debut test, our 3rd most capped player was Boony with 29. That was the last time it was below 30.

Sorry, I lie. In that match where AB took his 11 for (88/89 v Windies) our third most capped player then was Swampy with 27.

Re: The downside of Magoo's retirement
The team for the next weeks Test in Adelaide would still qualify.
From the Sydney side take out Alderman (the dreaded Adelaide Hammy struck again!) and Taylor, and add May and Whitney (about the 6th Test for both).
Once we got to England, Lawson came back, and Boon, Marsh and Waugh had all edged into the thirties by the time Lawson retired on the eve of the next home summer.

In fact, that Adelaide test looks to be the last time we played any test with so few games played by the whole team.
Happily our current Test newbies mostly all have a lot of FC experience.

Re: The downside of Magoo's retirement
That's the positive spin you can put on the current situation.
It sounds a lot more comforting than the alternative, which goes something like, 'we have a whole mob that are old but still lack international experience'.
Right now I wouldn't mind hearing from some of those clowns from back in 2004 that screamed blue murder about the Spotty Youth's promotion to the Test side, like it was the grossest case of favoritism since Nero or whoever gave his donkey a Senate seat.

Most umpires here are former players, it's a bit worrying that lots of the guys I started watching as players are now umps.

Re: The downside of Magoo's retirement
Some incredible sageness from the Nerky one. When I read your and JGK's exchange about the youth of the side in that 88/89 Adelaide Test, my immediate thought was "yeah, and look at the renaissance that lead to". It was really the start of the victorious modern Aussie era.Fred Nerk wrote:That's the positive spin you can put on the current situation.

And, yup Nerky, even horrie must to eat his bitter Vomit bile about the Kid. His average is closing on 50 fast.

I don't know. Magoo could unite Australian cricket-lovers (with the exception of the usually sensible Mick Sawyer) as no other cricketer in the history of the game.Nath wrote:There's no downside! It's up, up and away!

I thought this announcement would have brought horrie out of his self-imposed exile. And Mick is very quiet.

Maybe Katich's ton really did blow Horrie out of his tree?

Re: The downside of Magoo's retirement
The possibility has just come to me that horrie and waboy might have been a kind of Dirty Harry/Josey Wales pairing.
You know: same actor, basically same character, same schtick, different names, one serious, one 'comic', the serious one accidentally funny about 10 times as often as the comic one is deliberately.

I went to school near Cameron White. That counts as well doesn't it?
