I saw that before I posted, but so what? My surname was changed deliberately by my immigrant forefathers deliberately so that they were not identifiable as a persecuted group. So which is my "real" name?doremi wrote:doctorspin wrote:And Chanderpaul himself says it is ChandERpaul.Henry wrote:Despite the spelling? And the fact that his own teammates call him Chanderpaul?

Should, for example people in the UK whose surname is Rose, be called Rosenthal, or those called Vice be called Weiss?
I get extremely irritated when people misspell my name (there is no difference in pronounciation whatever the spelling.)
The One's comments are plausable and may be correct, but who really knows what the original name was over 200 years ago? Yes, his forefathers and name were originally from India, but quite possibly the original name in India has evolved, but just in a different way from how it has evolved in Guyana.
And there is no defence for "Alfreddy"

Re: Nasser Hussain
The surname Naidu is spelled "Naidoo" in South Africa. Considering that the Indian alphabet differs from the Western, I don't see that one spelling is more correct than another.
Must say, I'd rather be Weiss (or White) than Vice...

Nasser? Legend. Top commentator. Droll. Knowledgable. Rarely is presumptuous. Good at bringing other commentators into a conversation.
Re: Nasser Hussain
The pronounciation could well have changed, and I have no problems with the spelling. Just that Chadrapaul or Chandrapal would probably be the correct pronounciation of the names, since they have Indian roots. Weiss, Weisz or Vice have the same pronouncation, so do Naidoo, Naidu, or Zaheer, Zahir, or even his first name, Shivnarine, Shivnarayan. The pronounciation is what counts.
What do I care anyways, it's his name and he doesn't seem to have a problem.
