Because once you're logged in you're more likely to contribute.
No point having a forum if no-one ever posts.
And also so casual visitors can't just see the number of terms and conditions we frequently break and report us the to the hosts...

I would post less often if you didn't have to log-in, but that would probably be a good thing for everybody concerned on the evidence of 1000+ posts so far. I think I'm going to make a concerted effort to post less often on all the forums I'm a member of though, starting now.
