statistically yes.
when you look into it a bit more, questions may be asked.
Not sure what is record against McWarne is?

Pretty good.
I still don't think he's a great though.
He only averages 43 outside of Asia.

Thing with Sehwag is that, great or not, he appears to be a nice guy without inflated notions of himself, and is also not an arrogant, ugly, qunt who goes around slanging the oppo and little children but whose eyes fill up with tears when he thinks of Juh Juh Juh Jeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssus.

Stats can't be warped like that. His stats outside India count as overseas. Period. It's not his fault we have two neighnbours playing cricket with similiar pitches. By that logic even some Aussie bats will be supermen like if one combines their records in both Aus and NZ and some Saffies will be Gods when their scores in Zim are added to their home tally! Are you going to judge someone like Kirsten on the basis of his scores outside of Africa?

Stop your bleating. Even Cricinfo seperate stats by continent. It's an established way of splitting stats.

He is a pretty impressive model of the dominate-by-attack opener. Gordon Greenidge also comes to mind.
The problem might be (if FWIW we are considering "Hall of Fame candidates"), that with all the internationals played in the contemporary game, he has died by the sword rather too often.
Cricket definitely needs the swashbuckling buccaneers, though. Hence, whatever his place in the list of legends (or all that artificial palaver), Sehwag certainly cuts a memorable figure. Headscarf and all.

Isn't it because he's bald so he wears a headscarf to keep his head cool?

Re: Is Virender Sehwag now a cricketing great?
80.1 Muralitharan to Sehwag, no run, turns in from the off stump line and hits him on the pad. Going down leg and they don't appeal
80.2 Muralitharan to Sehwag, no run, leans forward to defend the off break down the track
80.3 Muralitharan to Sehwag, no run, goes back to cut a spinning off break to the off side and to cover point and he refuses the single! he doesn't want to expose Ishant . He could have taken the 200 , though. Team before self.
80.4 Muralitharan to Sehwag, no run, gets forward to drive to covers
80.5 Muralitharan to Sehwag, no run, Aha! The reverse sweep but straight to backward point. What a guy!
80.6 Muralitharan to Sehwag, 1 run, He gets his 200 with a dab past square leg. The team-mates in the dressing room are up on their feet. What a superb innings this has been.
Great or no, he is all class, a team man.

Well, maybe! I wasn't suggesting he was deliberately styling himself as a pirate. That would be a wee bit camp, in any case.

Re: Is Virender Sehwag now a cricketing great?
In order for me to consider him a 'great' player, he would have to become a bit more consistent. Given the nature of how he bats though, I appreciate that consistency isn't easily achieved. I've always considered him a slightly poor-man's right handed version of Lara.
So, not a 'great' of the game, but I love the way he b!tch-slaps the opposition into submission and makes bowlers look oh-so feeble.

Good summary.
When he's on form he looks unstoppable. But when he's not he looks like a rabbit.

he is a small g great imo. you cant ignore the humongous innings he has had and against most opposition. combine that with his scoring rate and the fact that as an opener he sets the tone for the innings and you have an invaluable asset to any team

He also only averages 28 on sundays when he forgot to shave in the morning, and there was a 3/4 moon in the sky....

hayden averages less than 43 outside australia. so sehwag must at least be the best modern opener

I'm not shifting any goal posts.
I wasn't even comparing Hayden and Sehwag. But if you are going to make the comparison it stands to reason that you compare them in the era where they have both batted.

I'm not even a Sehwag follower but everytime I see him on Scorecards and in the News the guy is getting big centuries. Not sure how he does it to be honest, he isn't one of the Big Four and he is in and out of the Indian XI more times than I've had hot dinners.
Good on Sehwag though.
