Bowlers are 'better' than batsmen. You'd have to go with Fred.

I'd have LLL in the team. Clearly better than both of them combined. Should be captain too.

Hmmm. We wouldn't have won the Ashes without Fred but we also wouldn't have won the Ashes without Pietersen. Then again, if we'd had Thorpe instead of Pietersen we could conceivably still have won the Ashes, whereas no-one could have replaced Fred.

But if Fred retired today and KP ended up with 25 + hundreds at an average of 55ish, would your answers be the same?

I'd say theoretically, if Pietersen started to cluck like a chicken, headbutted an actual cherub, did a 9.7 pirouette and threw some beef jerky 79 metres with no tail-wind, he'd be the more valuable.

Conversely, if Fred booted a 102m field goal, grew some brussel sprouts, laughed at a disabled person and beat off to Benny and the Jets whilst watching Question Time, he'd be the more valuable.

Doesn't seem to be any hypothetical happy medium. Or happy large.
