All said and done several of the seniors should have been on the way out anyway.

Nah, can't think of a single one who's better, and therefore good enough to replace one of them.

And you came to this conclusion how ??doremi wrote:Nah, can't think of a single one who's better, and therefore good enough to replace one of them.
The way our seniors are glorified, justified and deserving youngsters kept out is akin to some old senile men claiming that his wives at at 70 were still as beautiful as the first time they saw her. Good for feeling soft, touchy and all romantic but simply not the truth.

Yes, and who exactly are these deserving youngsters and how exactly have they deserved this, except for the fact that they're young?

Rohit Sharma & Yusuf Pathan to name a couple from the younger brigade. If somebody is fit and able and still performing at later ages that is fine. That is clearly not the case with our seniors. During the SL series after the first test the "it is only one test" line was thrown, at the end of it "it is only one series" line was thrown. Basically any excuses seem to be OK to justify hanging on to the by-gone heroes at the expense of the team's welfare.

I think ganglion has only experienced 'bias' when people insist on looking at his record

Too good a player/captain to go out like this.

As I said many times, thank god you're nowhere near Indian selection committee. BTW, you forgot to add Kaif, Chopra, and Badri.Josh Carney wrote:Rohit Sharma & Yusuf Pathan to name a couple

Last one year -
Sourav Ganguly average - 44.83
Sachin Tendulkar average - 45.43
VVS Laxman average - 50.94
Rahul Dravid avrage - 34.27
Except Dravid who's been really off those are very good stats, and even he manages to just be below average, not conclusively bad by any means. So, they are performing at a later age.
Also if we consider the SL series as an anomaly, as has been touted, and accept the fact that their bowling was both good and unique because of Mendis and Murali, Ganguly averages 54.44 and Sachin averages 63.20 ignoring that series. Any country would take performances like these from their batsmen without thinking for a heartbeat. So, if they haven't forgotten how to bat in about a few months or so from the SA series, I think the "it's only a one series line" not too much off the mark.
Moving on to Rohit Sharma, I don't think there's much doubt that I rate him very highly. But he hasn't really deserved the India cap over one of the others (yet) by any stretch of the imagination. Most of his innings in ODIs have been very pretty but short innings'. He averages about 25 after 28 matches in ODIs. That's poor by any standards and with a decent sample space. Even disregarding stats, he's looked absolutely woeful in his recent international appearances. However, now that Sourav has said that he'll retire, he's IMO the best bet.
Yusuf Pathan is frankly a ridiculous option. You were going better with Mohammad Kaif.

Re: Ganguly alleges Bias from the previous selection committee
I see Yusuf as a hard hitting all rounder lower down the batting order, more a batsman bowler who can supplement the bowling when we go with 4. Definitely not Irfan, his bowling has absolutely gone down hill as he bulked up. India has not had a hard hitting all rounder (not including Dhoni) for a long time and Yusuf has the ability to fill the gap.furriner wrote:Josh Carney wrote:Rohit Sharma & Yusuf Pathan to name a couple from the younger brigade. Re: Ganguly alleges Bias from the previous selection committee
Doremi, Kaif is still in my equation. The two names I put forward were from the latest crop coming through.
Have some question marks on Tiwary and Badri's ability to survive top pace / seam bowling. Need to see a bit more of them. Something seems amiss with both against that kind of attack.
And did guys like Viru and your pet hate Gambhir face a different set of bowlers in SL as opposed to the old four ?
And Keep your Gambhir signature on, it is working well for India !

Re: Ganguly alleges Bias from the previous selection committee
Tiwary did quite well against Zak and Agarkar against Mumbai in one of the few FC matches in which I've seen him. The track wasn't too flat either. That's about as good a pace attack as you're going to get in India. Badri's piling on runs season after season. But yeah, major question marks on both. I'm also looking at Pujara, I think he's got Dravid-ish qualities in him. Kohli as well.
Now that Gambhir seems to have made his place in the team, I want him to do well, even though I still have doubts he will. Not my pet hate, just don't think he has the qualities to be consistently good against quality pace attacks
Viru, Gambhir and Laxman could adapt more quickly to the bowlers, the other three couldn't. Same as the ODI guys couldn't in Pakistan. Mendis is a freak.
We also were unlucky with referrals.

He's denied giving any such interview. If true, this is pretty low, even for the Indian media.

Ha Ha Dilipji talking about fitness. Never said a word when Sachin scored a duck and spent the rest of the time in the pavillion at Chepauk against SA.

Josh,
You need to stop reading cricketnext which is just a rubbish news source. Try HT or Hindu. These are much much better.

For a start there is a difference between interviews and editorials.Chandan wrote:Josh,

Then I suggest that yourself, and this applies to other parochial fans as well, should stop viewing the Indian Cricket arena through "narrow beamed pink coloured glasses" that more often than not only focuses on only one player.
