Another fantastic 200* from the incomparable Mark Ravin Ramprakash against Somerset this week.

We simply don't see blind Ramps-worship like this any more, more's the pity.

Ramps has apparently been appointed England's batting coach, in perhaps another triumph of hope over realism.

Anyway - of the several Leo-dominated Ramps-worshipping threads - this seems to be the most apt for this bit of news, which I can't see announced elsewhere.

The man knows how to bat, of that there is no doubt. Could be a good appointment.

Like all appointments, only the outcome will tell us - a little - how good a coach he is. The material he has to work with is beyond his control, and there will always be external influences, good and bad.

So? His failures at international level don't piss on his credentials as a batting coach.

Technically the most correct batsman of his generation - with the mental strength of a chocolate teapot.

You don't have to have been a horse to be a jockey, as the saying goes... the likes of Jose Mourinho never kicked a ball at professional level. However, putting someone in charge of something they did do and failed miserably at for a number of years is somewhat questionable. Will the players respect his obvious ability, or will his inability to produce that at the highest level compromise that?

Essentially, he has to be a good communicator.

@ Danny: we seem to be in complete agreement there, there's only one way to judge ... outcome, which cannot be predicted at all on basis of experience in some other arena. Did you think I was saying something else?

Yeah, I thought you were saying, as beamer seems to be, that because he was a shit international batsman he would be a shit batting coach. Which flies in the face of all available evidence. As you say, he might be shit, but we don't know.

No, I wasn't saying that ... I have no idea how he will go as coach.

Surely international batting is a large part mental. He should be okay on the technical side, but will that be enough?
