I think it's more to do with the fact he has been ultra-shithouse most of the time in England apart from a couple of crabby tons after struggling for most of the other games and looking like God - actual God, Jove or whatever else he likes to call him - had personally made him fail.

Hayden had the misfortune of being rated at #1 on the ICC rankings at one stage & you couldn't handle someone other than Brian Lara being considered the best in the world. To be fair the way he carried himself as an international player was unremarkable by Aussie standards. They're all semi-retarded once you get them near a sportsfield. There's probably nothing malicious about him- I doubt he puts kittens in blenders for fun or anything- he just seems a bit simple.

Obviously supremely talented when it comes to batting although I think his average is more early 40s in 80s & 90s money. Which is no bad thing- puts him above Athers & Stewie and alongside Taylor, Gooch, Slater & Haynes. That sounds like perfectly fair company to me.

Altogether a better player though than most of the above (Haynes was a good'un though) in one dayers- although again the total runs scored in one dayers skyrocketed in from the end of the 90s.

Not as missed as the NLWL, for me ... but despite his personality warts, Hayden has my grudging admiration. He's going to be missed at first slip.

He _was_ great, possibly the best opener we ever had, certainly part of the most successful opening pair we ever had.

He averaged 60 at the Gabba in Tests which is the Oz pitch most likely to 'do a bit' ...

The Gabba test pitch 'does a bit' for about 30 minutes on the first morning. After that it's as flat as anything going around.
