The same reason you thought you'd win the 07 series in Oz . . . . you're poms!!!!
Hmmmm, no.
I don't think so.
I think it's more to do with the fact he has been ultra-shithouse most of the time in England apart from a couple of crabby tons after struggling for most of the other games and looking like God - actual God, Jove or whatever else he likes to call him - had personally made him fail.
When in fact it was his ridiculous hubris that contributed mainly to his downfall.

One thing's for certain, he's gonna miss Hayden !
Aye, never once... and I mean that... has Wally kicked off - that's in my 6 years of posting on these things. He's one, along with peterg, to have maintained an air of dignity over the course of time.
To some extents he is correct in peterg's bias, but then peter would refute any bias by posting some immensely well thought out posts in rebuttal.
So, all in all, it's a bit of a strange slanging match.
Peace to both.
Re: Hayden calls it a day.
Oh, and finally, Hayden lost Aus the Ashes '05????
Bullshit.
Stop crying.
You got beaten by the better team.
Get the phuck over it.

I have brought it up in the past. You got on C4 years ago claiming that Donald had the better of MTB but you disappeared when I pointed out that Donald had only taken Hayden's wicket once in 12 test innings. Don't let the facts get in the way of your argument.
Hayden had the misfortune of being rated at #1 on the ICC rankings at one stage & you couldn't handle someone other than Brian Lara being considered the best in the world. So you try to discredit him, just as you are continually trying to discredit Sachin Tendulkar or anyone else that might threaten the the ranking of your hero. A true cricket fan would sit back and appreciate the talents of top class cricketers but you seem intent on dragging them down. It's the behaviour a person would expect of a fourteen year old. Well, I've had a gutful of it.

Re: Hayden calls it a day.
Ooh get her.
To be fair the way he carried himself as an international player was unremarkable by Aussie standards. They're all semi-retarded once you get them near a sportsfield. There's probably nothing malicious about him- I doubt he puts kittens in blenders for fun or anything- he just seems a bit simple.
Obviously supremely talented when it comes to batting although I think his average is more early 40s in 80s & 90s money. Which is no bad thing- puts him above Athers & Stewie and alongside Taylor, Gooch, Slater & Haynes. That sounds like perfectly fair company to me.
Altogether a better player though than most of the above (Haynes was a good'un though) in one dayers- although again the total runs scored in one dayers skyrocketed in from the end of the 90s.

Not as missed as the NLWL, for me ... but despite his personality warts, Hayden has my grudging admiration. He's going to be missed at first slip.

Re: Hayden calls it a day.
WW,
Frankly I cannot even remember having an argument with you in the past about Donald and Hayden years ago. I have had heaps of arguments with different people in the past seven years, so obviously it wasn't that major to stick in my mind.
You suggest that I disappeared. Again I cannot remember, but just to satisfy you, yes, I flounced off with my tail between my legs beaten by your better argument.
If I thought someone was a full of bucketloads of crap, who posted blatant lies, you now what someone mature and wise would do. They would ignore them. WW, you have that option. I suggest you take it and don't read my rubbish posts.
End of.
Thank you.

Well, it's not rocket science, but I'll spell it out.
He _was_ great, possibly the best opener we ever had, certainly part of the most successful opening pair we ever had.
He is now way past his prime.

He was fine belting the ball on the Australian runways, but when he came across pitches and bowling that was doing a bit, his method of planting his foot half way down the pitch almost before the ball was bowled brought him unstuck.

He averaged 60 at the Gabba in Tests which is the Oz pitch most likely to 'do a bit' ...

The Gabba test pitch 'does a bit' for about 30 minutes on the first morning. After that it's as flat as anything going around.

He averages 68 in the first innings of the match at the Gabba ....and 76 in the first innings of the match when the opposition has won the toss (thanks Nasser)

Re: Hayden calls it a day.
Take away the 380 against Zimbabwe and the World XI test, and Hayden's test average falls below 50.
