Dos was not the only one who struggled in that regard. Martyn and Gilchrist had a torrid time. More to the point, so did our new senior opener, Katich: will Jaques (or whoever his partner is) be any better?
Late swing plays a part in every Ashes in England - yet we've only won home series in 81, 85 & 2005 in the last 30 years. It is after all, all about the quality that it is wanged down with... as things stand you have no bothers at all.
As for Hayden - he may have had a poor 2005 but he pretty much killed us this decade that series apart.
81 was the Brearleyised Botham ...85 was Richard Ellison FFS ...and 05 was the Cooleyised Freddie and CoJones ...Sidebottom and Freddie will be very dangerous

Sidebottom will be absolutely lethal.
All we need is Monty to fire, or atleast Swann or Rashid do produce something.
I am deadly excited about the Ashes!

Re: Hayden calls it a day.
For mine, England's stars of 05 were: KP, Tres, Freddie, and the two Joneses.
But the thing is, even those who didn't startle us with brilliance at least put in a decent performance, and the lack of "passengers" made a huge difference: Hoggard, Harmison, Strauss, Vaughan ... even Giles put in an adequate all-round performance, for an England spinner.
The only one who didn't earn his lunch money was Bell (and Collingwood in his one match).

i was taking issue with S's less than generous comment re the Galoot and the 05 ashes loss.
Against the odds Galoot had a fantastic career...i say against the odds as after his first 6 or 7 Tests it looked like he would never be picked to play for Oz again..
In those first few years he seemed leaden footed and overawed...after each sacking he would go back and torture every Shield attack in the country...
personally I was appalled when after tons of runs he came back...how wrong I was...
he will go down with Morris, Ponsford, Lawry, Simpson and Taylor as one of our great opening bats.
the galoot and the bnlg will go down as our greatest opening combination.

Re: Hayden calls it a day.
Vaughan had a passive effective role as a batsman, but that 166 at OT was imperative in Englands efforts to prevent Australia from taking a stranglehold.
Take away Vaughans 166 from 444 (278) and England would have been well adrift of Australia's 302. (Thank god for Englands bowling attack).
We owe it to the Captain as well.

use of bnlg shows that it was me...the stats are there...while other opening combos arguably faced better bowling attacks, you can only play against what opposition there is.
pity Galoot has not gone out on a high note.

Gideon Haigh was just on and took it to mean Shield, club, country etc. - in other words everything.

Roight, let's hope all the operners around the country start churning out the runs so we get some dinkum competition for the vacant opener's spot.
Would seem that the Ginga Ninja and Phews have the lead at the moment but if Froggie scores heavily, he could grab his Test spot back sooner rather than later.
Must be a funny feeling for Fleas not to be looking over his shoulder.

Re: Hayden calls it a day.
Interesting that Haigh was a bit restrained in response to the question that he must be one of our greatest ever openers, though unquestionably he probably is.
He said he was fortunate that the peak of his career probably coincided with one of the weakest eras ever in pace bowling. He also said he thought that Hayden was wise to depart now given the disparity in his career numbers between home and away performances given the impending tough tours ahead. He noted that his average in England is only 34.
He appeared to break down fairly early in the conference and then regained his composure.
Haigh thinks that Jaques will replace him and that Warner has a long way to go to succeed in the first class arena.
