You can't always make the assumption that a captain gets it right at the toss apropos the statement highlighting his average when the opposition has won the toss. IIRC England famously sent us in on a featherbed in Brissie. The Gabba pitch usually only does something if there's been inclement weather in the lead-up to the test.

That a FTB like Hayden could average 50 in Test cricket speaks volumes about how crap bowlers are and how flat pitches have become.

Yet on those same flat tracks against those same crap bowlers, Langer could only average 45.

Of the two, it's of no doubt who cashed in when the going was good and who scored the tougher runs.

It is a decent indicator

Hayden has 7 100's from 16 tests when the opposition has won the toss and fielded, those can't all be captain mistakes

Hayden has some canyon size holes on the C.V, but I would make him one of the 5 greats from the last 20 yrs alongside BCL, SRT, RP & tugga

20 years covers a fair chunk of AB too, let alone Dravid, Sanga etc.

There's something peculiarly two-toned about IZ's current picture.
