The worst foods in the world
As it is Friday...
Nominations awaited. The rules are:
Nominate as many as you want to, but these should be
* Legitimate foods eaten in much of the world (e.g. not some worm on a purely Nicobarese diet)
* Not too specific (e.g. the chicken a la king made by my brother-in-law, when my mother's version is perfectly OK).
* Dishes you have actually eaten yourself, and not food you avoid for cultural, ethical or religious reasons.
My list would start off with something along the line of:
Kidneys. A puzzling one. I have nothing per se against eating kidneys, they smell divine in S&K pies, and the sauce they are cooked in is divine on toast - but merely biting into a tiny piece provokes projectile vomiting.
Coriander. Have I mentioned somewhere that I hate coriander leaves?
Ginger jelly chocolates. When I was a kid, my grandmother always brought along huge boxes of chocolates. A wonderful treat, but in the middle would sit the two ginger jelly chocolates. They were responsible for much childhood tension, lest you got one by accident instead of a caramel cup - but once we got wise to their wrappers they'd remain behind, sitting in the empty box like the testicles of some unloved male critter.
Pro-Nutro. It's still on the market after many decades - but probably only because no-one has bothered to buy or remove the original stock. Probably contributed greatly to the impression kids get that grownups really hate them.
Strawberry yogurt. I love strawberries right off the sun-kissed vine - or used to, until I discovered their wonderfully unique flavour was not as much due to their home-grown freshness as to the fact that the mastiff pissed on them every morning in passing. It is probably not the fault of the yogurt that during an attack of tonsillitis at the age of eleven I was unable to eat anything but yogurt for a week - and that strawberry was the only available flavour.

Fake Turkish Delight. The sickly gelatine variety
Mayonnaise. Just tastes of sickly fat and calories.
In fact, anything sickly at all.
Worse still:
Anything unpleasantly slithery, like fish eyes or fish brains.
Anything with lumps reminiscent of vomit. Sago, tapioca, etc etc. Bad custard.
Anything hard-fatty or gristly. Pre-retch hard-to-deal-with unchewable fare (see previous). Though I have fought raw octopus (in Japan) and won.
Virtually any offal. Tripe is for the animal to digest, not us. Heart is for beating, not eating. Brain is for thinking, not drinking. DO I make myself plain?
(I make an occasional exception for liver - as long as it is not full of boyingy bits - stretchanble uncuttable unchewable veins, that is.)
Anything meaty or fishy that is "high" or in simpler English, clearly rotting. A lot of seafood. Tinned salmon. Catfood. Dogfood. Jugged hare. Excreta.
That's for starters.

Absolutely agree with Mynah about kidney - making me shudder just thinking about it. And coriander.
Also agree with Peter about offal*. There's so many nice things to eat. WHY would anyone choose to eat that?
Paté always turns my stomach. Getting it on one's fingers is like having baby poo on you, when you're changing a nappy.
Olives - I've tried many times to like them.
Smoked fish.
*Couldn't get over Heston Blumenthal recently. He's a three Michelin star chef (famous for his snail porridge . . .) and he was called in by the bosses of Little Chef (large chain of transport cafés) to transform them, cos they were losing money. One of his new suggested recipes was Lancashire Hotpot, using whole lamb's tongue, thyroid sweetbreads and an oyster. How out of touch can one be?!

Re: The worst foods in the world
Obviously I could say tripe, pease pudding, goat brains, but things particular to me are:
Onion - can't stand it, for some reason.
Blue cheese - not learnt to appreciate this.
Coffee - or this
Coca Cola - sick making
Aubergine I agree on, and avocado, apart from when covered with other flavours in dips.
Fruit cake of any sort
Marzipan
There's more, but less than there used to be.

Re: The worst foods in the world
Oh wow, I can't believe I forgot butter. Butter is my number one sickmaking food. I can bake with it, but if it goes near my mouth, or someone cruelly puts it near me, I want to retch. Again, better than I used to be, I even nibbled some sandwiches with butter knowingly the other month, but still prefer to be far away from it.
I used to detest Mayonnaise, until I discovered garlic mayonnaise. Now it's part of my staple diet. Or was, til I cut it out!

Mushrooms. I think we've covered this before - they're my arch nemesis.
Re: The worst foods in the world
The only thing I dislike is large amounts of fat - like you'd find on streaky bacon, or sirloin steak. Cut that crap off. Anything else goes down nicely.

If you don't like mushrooms then you definitely won't like magic ones...

Taste changes and you should keep trying tomatoes cos they're so good for you . . .Henry wrote:I hate tomatoes and cucumbers.

Re: The worst foods in the world
It's not dislike - it's phobic. Can't be anywhere near them. Disgusting things.
And, yes, I have had to opt out of magic mushroom sessions as a result. Didn't look like I was missing out on much, however, as everyone else who "dropped" them did nothing more interesting than giggle and occasionally go "this is wicked".
Looked shit.

Re: The worst foods in the world
You get more out of them if you cook them.
Of course preparing them in any way used to turn them from legal to a Class A drug, and now they are completely class A even raw. So I stay away from them now.
I had great times though - it was like looking through a kaleidoscope at times.

Re: The worst foods in the world
Fry some mushrooms in a little veg stock and when most of the stock has gone, stir in some Philadelphia (cream cheese.) Goes lovely on toast or in a crusty baguette.

Re: The worst foods in the world
Cucumbers, vile.
Raw tomatoes, vile, cooked in anyway, okay, don't know why, I think they must have an enzyme that is destroyed in the cooking process. I'm probably talking bollocks but food does weird things to you.
Pesto, why would you make it in the first place??? Oh, let's grind some pine nuts, basil and olive oil together...not.
Kidneys taste of and make urine, why would you put them in your mouth????
Tender liver with no 'tubes' and with bacon is lovely, with 'tubes' makes me gag.
Celery, on a par with cucumber, stagnant water in an inedible fibrous skin.
Swede and turnip, if we were meant to eat these we'd have four stomaches.

Cucumber, liver, kidney, celery, swede, turnip - concur.
Don't have any issues with tomatoes or pesto - although pesto and pasta is the blandest of bland. No idea how it has become so popular.

What's with all the Mushroom hatred FFS
Concur on Liver & Kidney. Not on Pasta though - seeing as you don't really eat it on its own.
