Re: National Anthems
I think we should have an English anthem (rather than a British one) for England teams... after all, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland use their own.
What about favourite national anthems of other countries? I think I'd go for Brazil, followed by Italy and Argentina.

I agree - it's terrific seeing the players get into it. Remember the Portuguese earlier in the WC?
The Aust anthem is pretty ordinary but does have the word "girt" which I have a strange fondness for.
I remember the last Soccer WC had some very good anthems but buggered if I can recall which countries. I have always liked the Marseillese (sp) and especially the gusto with which it is sung.
And, FWIW, I don't mind GSTQ.

It's true. La Marseillaise is a good one. Wonder what they're saying.
I always remember Billy Connolly saying that ours was so gloomy it should be changed to the theme tune from the Archers.

Re: National Anthems
We were wondering about the anthem of Fiji. Sounds like its been written to another tune, but we couldn't place it. Anyone recognise it?

Re: National Anthems
There's lots about it on Wkipedia.
The melody was adapted from a 1911 hymn by Charles Austin Miles entitled Dwelling in Beulah Land.

From Wiki:
Aux armes, citoyens ! To arms, citizens!
Formez vos bataillons ! Form your battalions!
Marchons, marchons ! Let us march, let us march!
Qu'un sang impur May tainted blood
Abreuve nos sillons ! Water our fields!

Re: National Anthems
I'm surprised some of these anthems haven't been banned for being a touch xenophobic!

We are the pride of Brisbane town
We wear maroon, blue and gold
We will always fight for victory
Like Fitzroy and Bears of old
All for one and one for all
We will answer to the call
Go Lions, Brisbane Lions
We’ll kick the winning score
You’ll hear our mighty roar

I find Flower of Scotland genuinely stirring. Wish we would adopt Jerusalem. The God Save could be reserved for state occasions.
