Re: National Anthems
Surprised that so many are taking these national anthems seriously, there must be some patriotism brainwash bit I missed out on, because I find them all sh!t. I wouldn't whack them on my stereo, they're a pain that comes before an event.

It's quite an important part to me.
Really? Fook, no. I think it's quite precious, tedious and not necessary.
I think the England Rugby team should sing "Eton Rifles" beforehand.
Re: National Anthems
The two countries that i most associate with (UK and Aus) have terrible anthems. "God Save the Queen" is about the leader not the country and disturbingly fascist in tone. The Sex Pistols version was better, a BBC employee once managed to play it one night in the 70's instead of the normal epilogue to the night's transmission.
"Advance Australia Fair" has shockingly bad lyrics "girt by sea" and manages to describe its bright red soil as "golden".
Both tunes are average at best.
Most other country's anthems have the advantage that i can't understand the lyrics. The Russian anthem is lovely (it was also the Soviet anthem) but their anthem of the 1920s was better (the Internationale). South Africa also has a lovely anthem.
Flower of Scotland and the Irish The Soldier's Song (Amhrán na bhFiann) are both beautiful tunes. Land of My Fathers (Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau) would be my favourite. The rendition from Cardiff Arms Park used to bring tears to the eyes.
England could opt for "Jerusalem" or "Land of Hope and Glory" both of which are very stirring.
The very best of all though is "The Star Spangled banner" as played by Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock. The Chinese should play it next year whenever the US win a gold medal.

I'd be happy for us to adopt 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' as our national anthem. Would be spectacular.

Hard to pull off. I suppose the captain of the team would have to take the lead vocals while the rest of the side took the "turn around bright eyes" part.
But yes, if they nailed it, it would be something special to see, say, a bunch of cauliflower-faced rubgy players giving it the "I really need you tonight!". Be a bit like Angry Anderson.
Personally, I'm rocking out to 'Better the devil you know' by Kylie at the moment - would make a great national anthem. There's not enough high-NRG Stock, Aitken and Waterman pop in the world.
There'd be less wars. That's a fact.
Re: National Anthems
Thou art the ruler of the minds of all people,
dispenser of India's destiny.
Thy name rouses the hearts of Punjab, Sind,
Gujarat and Maratha,
Of the Dravida and Orissa and Bengal;
It echoes in the hills of the Vindhyas and Himalayas,
mingles in the music of Jamuna and Ganges and is
chanted by the waves of the Indian Sea.
They pray for thy blessings and sing thy praise.
The saving of all people waits in thy hand,
thou dispenser of India's destiny.
Victory, victory, victory to thee.
Official govt. translation of our national anthem.

God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and Glorious,
Long to reign over us;
God save the Queen!
O Lord our God arise,
Scatter her enemies
And make them fall;
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
Oh, save us all!
Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign;
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen!
Not in this land alone,
But be God's mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world over
From every latent foe,
From the assassins blow,
God save the Queen!
O'er her thine arm extend,
For Britain's sake defend,
Our mother, prince, and friend,
God save the Queen!
If you're a republican athiest in Britain, yer screwed!
Got to love the old 4th verse of God Save The Queen too
Lord, grant that Marshal Wade,
May by thy mighty aid,Victory bring.
May he sedition hush and like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush,God save the King.

Re: National Anthems
Must be a bit embarrasing for old Lizzy hearing that song being belted out in her presence.

Better GSTQ lyrics
God save the queen her fascist regime
It made you a moron a potential h bomb !
God save the queen she aint no human being
There is no future in englands dreaming
Dont be told what you want dont be told what you need
Theres no future no future no future for you
God save the queen we mean it man (God save window leen)
We love our queen God saves (God save... human beings)
God save the queen cos tourists are money
And our figurehead is not what she seems
Oh God save history God save your mad parade
Oh lord God have mercy all crimes are paid
When theres no future how can there be sin
Were the flowers in the dustbin
Were the poison in your human machine
Were the future your future
God save the queen we mean it man
There is no future in englands dreaming
No future for you no future for me
No future no future for you
God save the queen her fascist regime
