How much less of a waste of life would it be if Vikas put this at the beginning of each post? In fact, he should change his ID to that.PeterCS wrote:LONG POST ALERT-

Hmmm, IDBRYP. Something that might come in handy in future.

And I regret it. It was the normal info thread you get on here by news junkies like me who troll the news websites. It's turned into who's a fascist and who's a nazi.
I expected it to spark a little bit of a debate, which is fun, but like a lot of threads it's used to settle scores. I should know. I had two threads aimed at banning me and the actual topic lasted one page before I was all forgotten about (Thank fark!) and the old trash came out.
These things can be fun but jeez there's a limit.

Re: Chappaquiddick Ted dead
It's a top thread.
Only on FB could you be labelled a 'lefty' simply for saying 'steady on' for dancing on a dead man's grave.
Only on FB could it be assumed that there would be future dancing upon the death of Maggie Thatcher by those who choose to sit out this particular dance.
Only on FB could it be presumed that those who chose not to join the dance were IRA supporters.
I'm not a Kennedy fan, and my politics are probably closer to Allan D's than PeterCS's, but the hate and bile on this thread disgusts me. I just think all the flak coming ONLY after his death is so poor ... I don't remember seeing 'courageous' posts attacking Kennedy here for page upon page while he was still with us, and let's face it, his death was hardly a surprise.
This post is squarely aimed at Allan D, not Growler (who posted with far more equanimity), and not even at merlo. Chill out, man. Find some tasty pictures to put up, if that soothes the savage beast within.

FWIW! (and to get back on thread) Kennedy did a lot of good. Whether out of civic mindeness or guilt I don't know.
It doesn't make up for Chappaqiddic or Clarence Thomas. He was a fair weather friend and certainly didn't need his meagre senate income to survive.

Re: Chappaquiddick Ted dead
Settle scores? In what way?
Each public figure, whether alive or dead, invokes differing reactions from the global populace.
BUT ... facts are facts.
Finding excuse and then apologising for the public figure's misdemeanours by invoking the use of terms such as "sense" and "understanding" and "tolerance", when said public figure made it his business to actively promote through his fundraising, what we here on this island were endeavouring to live and come to terms with ... viz., the bombings and the deaths of over 3,000 people at the hands of a vile element in a neighbouring country - is frankly nauseating.
A broad similarity could be drawn with say a prominent British politician lending support to Osama Bin Laden ... a fund raiser for Al Quaeda, who unleashed the atrocities of 9/11, and continues to do so ...
It doesn't quite sit well, does it?
To then label Kennedy's accusers as some kind of misguided and intolerant species is laughable.
I have no "score" to settle with Petey ... I respect his views, whilst I expect him to respect mine - though ain't seen that quite yet.
We're not all saintly parsons steeped in the piousness of a Mandela or a Gandhi.

I was talking about forumers settling scores, not scores against EMK. It seems as if you start a thread here and it rapidly evolves into past (perceived or otherwise) injustices.

It is just the nature of the beast that people will want to talk about someone when they die. I don't see a whole heap of threads being started to praise Nelson Mandela, but you can bet the day he dies there'll be scores of forummers lining up to write about why he was a great man.
But what do you do in situations where the recently deceased is not a great man? Do you declare discussion of his disgraceful behaviour taboo? Do you say nothing? Do you just let the horribly misleading hagiographies in the press go through to the 'keeper?
Ted Kennedy wasn't going to come on to this forum to defend himself when he was alive. It is not any less "corageous" to criticise him now than it was a month ago.
It is one thing to ask people to put politics aside when someone dies. Ideology and partisanship often results in irrational hate. But it is another thing to ask people to put aside the quality of someone's character.

I repeat ... I've no "score" to settle with PeteyCS - nor am I seeking to score points off him.

I have never been a great fan of the kennedy's, tho they have played a role in helping to create some more liberal aspects to the USA...
jfk was an appalling cold war warrior - eg with indefensible positions on Cuba...
the family is the classic Tammany hall mob - but hey criminality is often the starting point for transgenerational accumulation of power and wealth
