Mick Cocks, one of the founding members of Rose Tattoo has died. Five members of the band, four have died in the past three years, all from cancer.

Re: Time for a music thread
Learnt the solo to this over Christmas, it's not technically that difficult but it rates pretty f*cking high on the awesome scale.

The intro was one of the first pieces I bullied my teacher into teaching me. It's not that hard a song to play really.

Re: Time for a music thread
Nah, all my musical mates are either shithouse or so far ahead of me that it's embarassing to jam with them. I just stick with my loop station for the most part, occasionally whip out a solo at parties when I spot a guitar which usually impresses the casual listener, but anyone who actually plays can tell that I'm not particularly shit hot.Jontyh wrote:You in a band Vilks?

Here's something which looks easy but ain't. Don't think bullying works with this just practice!

Yeah - not bad, but he's no Segovia or Bream.
Vilks: do you do any songs? That's a top party piece if you can knock out a few on the acoustic..

Re: Time for a music thread
Is there anybody out there by Pink Floyd is my big party piece. I can play that song to perfection, it's great because it's not that hard to play but it sounds utterly immense. Stairway to Heaven also features, but if it's an accoustic guitar then it's hard to do the solo.Jontyh wrote:Yeah - not bad, but he's no Segovia or Bream.

Good call. I like a bit of Elvis, Squeeze, Stones, Dylan and Chuck Berry - no solos, though.
Strictly a strummer on the geetar..

Tom Lehrer expressed the same sentiments as R.Newman but rather more wittily imo:

Re: Time for a music thread
Saw this on a Monty Python doco on the weekend. Seems like a good place to put it fttb.
Probably not a song you should listen to loudly at work, though.

I wouldn't really compare the two, apart from the general thematic area of "might = right??"
The mode and tone are entirely different.
The Lehrer is breezily skittish with a couple of particular satirical digs about imperialist tendencies in the age of Mad magazine. The Newman is black humour, full of countersunk depthcharges about the supposed "theory" of MAD, and its underlying truculent ("spiteful") and ignorant contempt for fellow humanity, more akin to Dr Strangelove than The Mouse That Roared.
Personally I prefer the Newman in this case, but obviously it's a matter of taste.

Re: Time for a music thread
Better than "Money for Nothing" or "Teen Spirit" as a sardonic comment on the hard-working artist's public status and hand-to-mouth existence.
And an ironically natty ditty.
I used to like Alan Price's cover better, but that is too fresh-faced, too one-dimensional in its cheerfulness, and loses the "struggle for breath" (as Tadzio Rozewicz put it)
