On not knowing greek . . .
something to soothe your inferiority complex, EH.
I quote:
For it is vain and foolish to talk of knowing Greek, since in our ignorance we should be at the bottom of any class of schoolboys, since we do not know how the words sounded, or where precisely we ought to laugh, or how the actors acted, and between this foreign people and ourselves there is not only difference of race and tongue but a tremendous breach of tradition. All the more strange, then, is it that we should wish to know Greek, try to know Greek, feel forever drawn back to Greek, and be forever making up some notion of the meaning of Greek, though from what incongruous odds and ends, with what slight resemblance to the real meaning of Greek, who shall say . . .

Tac will knock me for using a cartoon analogy, no doubt. Left myself wide open for that one.

If I were Dem, you guys, I'd storm off the forum for you bringing my family into this . . .
Then again, if I were Dem I'd have to fanatsize about dressing up in an SS uniform and spanking Nigel . . . so best forget it . . .

Bah. I've enjoy EH's posts but must part company on this one. If someone wants to show off their knowledge of Greek, more power to them I say. I'm envious. I'd show off too.
Which is not to say that tac isn't a baiter par excellence (showing off my knowledge French here).
Oi Smerky, I'd be careful about speaking of leaving oneself wide open in a Greek thread.

Well we'll never know what Greek tac was talking about but basically the further away from Athens you got the more the language changed. Herodotus grew up in the outer parts of Asia Minor where Ionic Greek was spoken. There's no way you can read Herodotus in the 'original' because his works were translated for a wider audience that spoke Attic Greek, though if you can speak that you can read the original translations. Very few people can speak Attic Greek. I don't know if ionic Greek survived the rise of Rome. (Pretensious i know... wank wank).

They should have a word to the mad scientist father though about putting home made objects into controlled airspace.

An interesting, yet almost wholly incorrect summary the Greek language. Amazing that you managed to fit so many errors in so short a space . . . .
