Who here plays an instrument?

Who inspired you to take it up? Who influences you the most?

I play the saxophone. I'd say Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins and Wayne Shorter are my main influences, although I don't really sound much like any of them. I suppose I approach the instrument more like the hugely underrated Warne Marsh than anyone else.

I tend to eschew the huge vibrato and bluster so favoured by most saxophonists, partly becuase I am by nature quite contrary, but also because I see it more as a scholarly thing than a way of 'expressing your soul, man.'

I also play Bach and Scott Joplin's brand of ragtime on the piano.

Alto sax, then? I bought my stepdaughter one. I make her play it with a sock in the bell though, it's so loud!

I owned a guitar for about five years but in no way was I ever a musician. I didn't even know enough chords for Status Quo.

In 1997 high school girls were 'all the rage'.

Tenor, although anyone who's ever picked up a saxophone of any type, or arguably any kind of instrument at all since the early 50s, has felt Bird's influence.

I also own a bass clarinet, belying my fondess for Eric Dolphy.

I hope your step-daughter carries on with it. It could be worse, my brother plays the drums.

Yeah, many consider Bird to be the greatest ever jazz exponent.

I saw a bass clarinet once - huge thing like an alpine horn! Marcus Miller, the great jazz-funk bassist, had one on stage when I saw him.

Not at all cool and no one inspired me, but I can play the violin.
Apparently, I had a talent and was made to play it, (until my parents realised they'd actually have to BUY me one!)

Also played the steel drums for a while and was backing singer for the band we had in my friend's garage.

We could form quite an interesting band altogether, couldn't we? Very Happy
