It's a close run thing:
But I count the way he let Con smack him about in the first two Tests in the home Saffie series against him.
Still, a toss of the coin.

Opinion makes the forum go around.
And disagreeing with Saffies makes it spin even faster.

Poor old Dizzy had to constantly fight to keep the ball from TGM and tgm . . . should have taken a lot more wickets if it was't for those buggers being in the team . . .

Gillespie is horribly underrated.
He definitely lived in the shadow of Warne and McGrath. I think time will serve him well as the memory of his impotent bowling in 2005 fades away. If ever there was a case of someone being a 'shadow of their former self' that was it.

best overseas bowler that i have seen bowl in india. bowled better than mcgrath, pollock, donald, wasim, etc.
they got so close in 2001 because of him and won in 2004 because of him
wasnt quite as consistent all over the world though

Didn't he get seriously sledged by the English fans because he was Aborigine. I think that's why he was so nervous on the boundary and dropped the odd catch, and in essence his bowling suffered.
I recall some quite unsporting English supporting during that series.

I think the chants of "Gypo" were because of his long hair, was never aware of any sledging due to his Aboriginal descent.DJ_Smerk wrote:Hass wrote:Gillespie is horribly underrated.

Gillespie's bowling was already shot before the 2005 Ashes. He was starting to lose his zip during the home series against Pakistan in 04/05 and looked pretty ordinary in New Zealand in early 2005.
The abuse mightn't have helped, but he was already a spent force.

As Lever points out ... nothing quite like the sh*t England players have to take in Oz and Safferland.
It goes with the territory ... simple as that ... and in Dizzy's case (he really is a nice guy away from it all) he let the chants get to him and bottled it ... the rest is history.
The irony is that (according to the Barmy Army) it WAS because of his locks that he got the "gyppo" chant (it had nothing to do with his Aboriginal origins ) and when they realized it was getting to him, they laid it on heavier.
Job done.

I can remember someone here calling Flintoff the Rolls Royce of fast bowlers.
Bit of a slur on RR I thought.
Are you sure it wasn't in his big-boned phase and someone said his only cricketing use would be as a roller?

Aye. The sledges related to his resemblence to a male gypsy.vilkrang wrote:I think the chants of "Gypo" were because of his long hair, was never aware of any sledging due to his Aboriginal descent.
