FFS, T20 is a crap version of the sport. Today's Dubber v Sozzie match was basically a non-event after 10 overs.

Mate, take the blinkers off. There has been some extraordinary stuff on display through the series. You should be surprised that we are so far into the series before you could trot out the "bah! It's never a good game shit".

JGK has been saying this all along. As have several other forumers. A couple of the games have gone down to the wire, but most of them have just been displays of slogging.

KFC Big Bash - Page 10 Empty Re: KFC Big Bash

Post by Zat Sun 17 Jan 2010, 23:22

Results of the KFC Hype Fest round-robin matches, with my comments attached.

Queensland v Victoria at Brisbane - Dec 28, 2009
Victoria won by 3 runs (D/L method)
Victoria 157/8 (20/20 ov); Queensland 121/6 (16/16 ov)

A good opener for the tournament, robbed of the final four overs by rain. Could have been a close finish

Western Australia v South Australia at Perth - Dec 29, 2009
South Australia won by 29 runs
South Australia 196/6 (20/20 ov); Western Australia 167 (19/20 ov)

SA show a sign of things to come when their imports lead the way, Pollard with the bat, Afridi with the ball. This game could have gone either way until fairly late in the piece. Gayle's injury for WA was possibly the deciding factor.

Tasmania v New South Wales at Hobart - Dec 30, 2009
New South Wales won by 31 runs
New South Wales 194/4 (20/20 ov); Tasmania 163 (19/20 ov)

Big hitting from the Blues, espceially Warner, was spectacular, although not exactly pretty. Tasmania were in the hunt for the first few overs of their innings, but as soon as they started trying to finesse tings instead of going the tonk, they were rooted.

Tasmania v Western Australia at Hobart - Jan 1, 2010
Tasmania won by 17 runs
Tasmania 167/8 (20/20 ov); Western Australia 150 (18.5/20 ov)

A t20 match with mood swings to match Michael Slater! Tassie started badly, and recovered to a total that looked relatively mediocre. WA were never really in the chase after losing their first wicket, as the floodgates opened. Then again, some people like to watch spectacular collapses.

Victoria v New South Wales at Melbourne - Jan 2, 2010
Victoria won by 6 wickets (with 2 balls remaining)
New South Wales 178/6 (20/20 ov); Victoria 179/4 (19.4/20 ov)

Some incredible catches in this one. And a finish that went right to the wire. The NSW/Victorian rivalry highlighted by the last over being a battle between a product of the well-known Victorian country island of Trinidad, Dwayne Bravo, and the boy from Barbados (an outer western suburb of Sydney) Dwayne Smith.

South Australia v Queensland at Adelaide - Jan 3, 2010
South Australia won by 4 wickets (with 6 balls remaining)
Queensland 156/4 (20/20 ov); South Australia 160/6 (19/20 ov)

Ctaches win matches. Queensland dropped a couple, and SA got home. Afridi again proving a difficult proposition with the ball for SA. And Cosgrove managing an earth-shaking 43.

Western Australia v New South Wales at Perth - Jan 5, 2010
Western Australia won by 127 runs
Western Australia 198/1 (20/20 ov); New South Wales 71 (16.2/20 ov)

A great century from Shaun Marsh. NSW lost wickets early, and were never in the hunt.

South Australia v Victoria at Adelaide - Jan 7, 2010
South Australia won by 91 runs
South Australia 202/7 (20/20 ov); Victoria 111 (14/20 ov)

Victoria took ages to get their 20 overs in the field finished, some of the faffing about may have helped out SA, especially late in the innings, as they had, on a couple of occasions, plenty of time to get their heads around the situation. The vomits were made to pay, and after losing wickets in each of the first four overs, were no hope.

Queensland v Tasmania at Brisbane - Jan 8, 2010
Queensland won by 9 runs
Queensland 153 (20/20 ov); Tasmania 144/9 (20/20 ov)

A Geeves hat-trick in the first half, and Queensland twice taking two wickets in two balls. Hopes was the star in this match with runs and wickets.

Western Australia v Victoria at Perth - Jan 10, 2010
Western Australia won by 24 runs
Western Australia 152/5 (20/20 ov); Victoria 128/8 (20/20 ov)

Given that these matches are supposed to be about big hitting, the pitch for this one was very ordinary. Slow to start with and slower as the match went on. Batsmen from both sides found it diificult to get the ball away. There have often been comments made that low-scoring limited-overs matches are more exciting than some big-hitting ones. That can't be said about this match, Victoria never looked like getting the runs.

South Australia v Tasmania at Adelaide - Jan 12, 2010
South Australia won by 23 runs
South Australia 131 (18/20 ov); Tasmania 108/9 (20/20 ov)

Tassie managed another hat-trick. Indeed there were four wickets in successive balls due to a run out on the next delivery. South Australia looked like the SA of old when they hatted batted out their overs and seemed to be well short of a par score. Tasmania were in the brown sticky stuff from the get-go, losing wickets on the first two balls of their innings. Even then, they shouldn't have been in trouble, but panicked instead of trying to build to the target, losing regular wickets and falling well short.

New South Wales v Queensland at Sydney - Jan 13, 2010
Queensland won by 54 runs
Queensland 110/4 (9/9 ov); New South Wales 56/7 (9/9 ov)

A rain-shortened slogfest, which NSW were all but out of after the first couple of overs of Queensland's innings. Their batting was even more deplorable than their fielding.

Victoria v Tasmania at Melbourne - Jan 15, 2010
Victoria won by 9 wickets (with 19 balls remaining)
Tasmania 160/8 (20/20 ov); Victoria 161/1 (16.5/20 ov)

In front of a huge crowd, Tassie started well, but once Paine was out, nobody else offered any resistance, and looked 20 runs short of a competitive total. Brad Hodge proved that with 90. Tassie's lack of penetration while bowling was crucial.

Queensland v Western Australia at Brisbane - Jan 16, 2010
Queensland won by 37 runs
Queensland 203/7 (20/20 ov); Western Australia 166/5 (20/20 ov)

Chris Simpson's 76 for Qld was an interesting innings to watch. Many big hits, most of them not found in any coaching manual. It wasn't pretty, but it was effective. Chris Gayle managed to get himself out hit wicket for WA, in a portent of things to come in the chase. WA never in the hunt but went down swinging.

New South Wales v South Australia at Sydney - Jan 17, 2010
New South Wales won by 8 wickets (with 68 balls remaining)
South Australia 81 (14.4/20 ov); New South Wales 82/2 (8.4/20 ov)

South Australia obviously didn't give a stuff about this match, having already topped the table, and won the right to host the final. It showed in their lacklustre batting. Warner's 54 off 21 balls will be looked at as a big-hit-fest in years to come, especially given four successive sixes off Tait. It may well be forgotten that Cosgrove dropped him. The match was done in just over 23 overs total.

It's great that 20k+ are going to see domestic cricket (even if they are not paying). If more people enjoy the game in whatever form then that is a good thing.

But for me the cricket has been a bit meh. Watching someone slog a six loses some of the appeal when you are expecting them to do it.

Well summed up, Woody. Cricket should see some sort of risk v reward equation. Risks in t20 are greatly reduced.

I'm aware that this is his long held view. If the closeness of the finish was the primary consideration in rating a game of sport then we'd all be disappointed much of the time.

If the Billies had won that ...and the other results stayed the same ...the Billies would be hosting the final ...and the Wozzies would be in third spot

Even Duckworth Lewis has an anti-wozzie bias ...qunts

He's probably the best T20 batsman in the country. His ball striking in that game was stunning.

Just seen the scorecard for the match.

Victoria have a ruddy strong unit.

Not sure why Tassy picked Krejza though. Peculiar, as he doesn't look like a short-form bowler.

aye, they do. Their trouble is that "on paper" doesn't necessrily score the runs for you. Apart from the game against Tassie Hodge & the key batsmen failed to fire well enough.

So the big bash prelim final is not too far off. Arguably a more important match than the final itself, given that both finalists qualify for the CL.
