Quotas scrapped for national teams

At long last even the Government is admitting it was a failed experiment.

(Good news, if true. Waiting though, to see if they're really scrapping it, or just renaming it. Remember when "quotas" were replaced by "targets"?)

Read it through.

He says no quotas but transformation will continue.

Perhaps they'll rename them 'Ntini's' in honour of the first quota success story?

Presumed translation, "We had to scrap something that publicly obvious because it made us look like fools, so we're replacing it with secret threats."?

Ntini's rise through the ranks and selection predated quotas.

And only at national level, the provincial BS continues.

Does it also not say that basically a massive chunk of overall funding, is essentially being re-routed into just young black sportspeople?

Makes no difference to me, but surely that means funding will be taken from the grand scheme of things, black and white, and shoved to just one area of development!?

And will disappear. The black clubs are already given massive amounts of kit which disappears overnight. One of our players parents showed me a +R2000 bat on Saturday, that he had picked up, brand new, for R300.

The blacks are the more poverty-ridden part of SAfrican society, so don't see a problem if the money goes to their development.

However, don't understand the obsession with getting black players in every team either. If I'm not mistaken the SAfrican football team is almost completely black, so what are they trying to prove?

No one minds it going into development. It is the lining of people's pockets that we object to.

Well that does appear to be a large issue really. Get given it, nick it, then flog it.

I dont think there is hardly anyone in SA that doesn't have a problem with that.

Taips, sounds about right! Bargain really, but not the best use of funding IMO!

Was a bargain. I have a contact at the local GM importers and it would cost me a lot more than that.

Does anyone else always think of the Jawas and their battle cry whenever Ntini's name crops up?

Post by ten years after Sun 11 Nov 2007, 02:49

Since the black population in South Africa forms the vast majority, cricket (and other sports) would be mad not to do as much as possible to develop the game within the black community. The country is in an unusual situation among test cricket countries in this regard and are not to be blamed for trying to find ways of redressing the situation.

Youngsters are attracted to games by having heroes they can identify with. I imagine this was the thinking behind trying to get black cricketers onto TV and the only way to do this is by having them play international cricket. The trouble with a blunt quota system is that it can appear to be no more than tokenism which may have had the opposite to the intended result.

If South African cricket can come up with a way of tapping the sporting talent of their black population they will be pretty formidable.
