Beckham - best English right midfielder or ...
Beckham - best English right midfielder ever or....
...an overrated hack?
Now that his English international career appears done and dusted - a time to reflect perhaps?
Personally, I think he had a great and accurate right cross, took good corners, and had an incisive free kick. And then there was "that" goal from near half way v Wimbledon in 1996. But was there really much else?
I think England have had many, many greater midfielders than David Beckham.
Well done on making millions out of being a reasonably skillful player with a wonderful marketing team behind you, and a scrawny "poppette" on top of you.

Instrumental in the 1999 treble so I will always have a soft spot for him.

If there's any interest I expect Scum v non-Scum to influence this poll.

Beckham has been a very fine player, and one of the best in the world in his era. There have been better players, sure, but he's still been a superb performer. No disgrace in not being the greatest player ever to put on boots.
And he cared - really cared - about playing for England, which endeared him to the fans. The game against Greece when he basically played them on his own will always be a fond memory.

Somewhere between option 1 and option 2. Even when he was supposedly not at his best he was still always creating and scoring goals.

A very good player for England though, and he did care about playing for his country. Unfortunately amongst those responsible for the WAG culture surrounding the team for a while...

Word.
Re WAGs ... Also, since his move to Real, more focused on the global marketing of Brand Beckham, hence the idiotic move to LA Galaxy ... nevertheless, wore his heart and the England badge on his sleeve and always tried to give his best.
As vilks said above - THAT goal against Greece will always be remembered with affection ...

And creating endless goals for players at club and country, for being quite possibly the finest crosser of a ball the game has seen in the modern era, for being one of the best passers of a football around for many a year, and for being a truly brilliant taker of free kicks. Add to that a player who despite the WAG culture which he certainly helped to prominence, he's someone who has conducted himself admirably for many years. Everyone who meets him talks about how utterly charming he is, how he has time for everyone, how he is a credit to himself. His work (which shouldn't be underestimated) putting himself at the complete disposal of the London Olympic team DID have an impact on winning the bid, because he charmed everyone.
There have been better footballers, though he was up there as a very, very fine player. But I actually rather admire the bloke you know.

But this is just a tiny bit gay - "Everyone who meets him talks about how utterly charming he is, how he has time for everyone, how he is a credit to himself."

Nah, none. Wasn't really directed at you anyway, but I actually think Beckham as a player is rather under-rated, and he does seem to get abuse from some quarters for not quite being the best player in the world at his peak. Always found that a bit weird, personally.

Come now, Skulls, Becks is undoubtedly a beautiful man. If you were going to, it'd be him, wouldn't it. Be honest.

I did want his babies when he thumped that free kick against Greece. And when scored that penalty against Argentina. In my modern metrosexual way, I could have happily snogged his face off.
