One suggestion, have a few trusted "volunteer" post-moderators, people who can log on at odd hours, and who have authority to delete any real rubbish almost as soon as it is posted.

Somewhere in that old ABC forum is the original reference to Zimi's burning crosses and hoods. But be stuffed if I'm hunting through 300K+ posts to find it.

At a guess it would be early 2002.

And on the dying day of the ABC forum, even though they'd said they weren't going to have any more discussion on Murali's chucking action, this gem was the second-last post started by a forumer (as opposed to the goodbye post from the qunt mod.)
