Australia captain Ricky Ponting isn't expecting miracles from his team in the coming two-Test series in India, but will demand a high level of performance.

The bulk of the squad set off from Sydney on Sunday for the quickfire tour that includes one practice match and two Tests, with a separate component of three one-day internationals.

Australia have dropped to fourth in the Test rankings, below India, South Africa and Sri Lanka and Ponting conceded his team had work to do to regain top spot.

"I don't expect miracles, but expect a very high level of performance over the next few weeks,'' Ponting said.

"It's an important tour for all of us.

"I'd like to get the team back to No.1 again and this will be hopefully just one of those steps along the way."

FFS, we are currently the 4th ranked Test nation. It will take 3 years of near perfect results to get back to no. 1. Copey dunt.

Erm, I was merely pointing out that the time taken from this point to get back to no. 1 will probably beyond Drunky's career (3 years) so it's a pointless statement. Last I looked, when you use the term "we" you are including yourself in that wish.

But receptionists and travelling salespeople say "we" when they speak of the company to the public - even if they are leaving the next week.

While he is (still) skipper, Punter is speaking for the Australian cricket team as a body. Corporately, so to speak. Regardless of what personal future he may have with it.

I don't think we are any chance of regaining no. 1 between now and 2013 Ashes, which I don't believe Drinky will be part of.

Still, anything to get some discussion going is good.

Didn't they float that with one breath and bin it with the next as being unfeasible? Weather, marquee series, dual hemisphere logistics etc.
