Cooley gets a new job
After helping England to discover the secrets of Murray Mints, and doing, well, there must be something, it just doesn't come to mind at the moment, with Australian bowlers, Troy Cooley has a new job.
No truth to the rumour that the academy is to be moved to a new complex in the Perth suburb of Peppermint Grove.Cricket Australia Media Hack wrote:Troy Cooley appointed Head Coach of CA Centre of Excellence
Australia’s Pace Bowling Coach Troy Cooley is to become the new Head Coach of Cricket Australia’s (CA) Centre of Excellence (COE) in Brisbane, CA announced today.
Outgoing COE Head Coach, Greg Chappell has moved to the newly-created role of CA National Talent manager, based in Melbourne.
Cooley will continue to closely support the Australia team’s Vodafone Ashes and 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup campaigns as he transitions into his new role.
His appointment is an exciting one for Australian cricket that capitalises on his extensive coaching experience in Australia and abroad and his recent work with the Australian Team as an assistant coach to Tim Nielsen, as well as his work at the COE heading up the CA Pace Bowling Program.
Cooley will build on the outstanding success of Greg Chappell in the role, and his elevation comes at a time when Australia is embarking on the Vodafone Ashes campaign and ICC Cricket World Cup defence.
CA’s desire and need to continue to work with State Cricket to develop the next layer of Australian players and the recent announcement of the new COE facility - a significant redevelopment that will put Australian cricket at the forefront of innovation in sport in this country - complements the appointment.
“I’m excited to be appointed to this challenging role. It provides me a wonderful opportunity to continue the outstanding work of former head coaches and benefit from soon-to-be-created facilities at the Centre of Excellence, which I believe will lead the cricketing world in combining coaching and sports science,” Cooley said.
“There is no doubting the importance of the COE in the cricketing pathway. When I first arrived at the Cricket Academy, as it was then called, in 2000, Rod Marsh was the head coach and helped to develop players such as Michael Clarke, Shane Watson, Mitchell Johnson and Nathan Hauritz. These players are now playing an integral role in the Australian team hopefully securing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India, reclaiming the Ashes and defending the ICC Cricket World Cup.
“It is extremely exciting to lead the COE’s coaching team and to be working closely with the states, territories and Australian Institute of Sport as we look to continue our important role in providing support for the current and next generation of Australian cricketers,” Cooley added.
CA’s Acting Chief Executive and General Manager of Cricket Michael Brown said: “In Troy Cooley we have a coach and talent manager with an impeccable record. Troy’s coaching successes with the England team in 2005 are well documented and since he returned to Australian cricket in 2006 he has been responsible for assisting the development of the talented crop of young fast bowlers Australia currently has at its disposal. His work at the COE and with our States, when not on the road with Australian team, has been outstanding and he is the obvious choice to carry on the good work of Greg Chappell in this role.
“We have some very important cricket coming up and CA has developed a transition plan that will see Troy continue to support the Australian men’s team throughout the Vodafone Ashes Test series and ICC Cricket World Cup campaign,” Brown added.
During that time Troy will perform a number of key COE Head Coach duties, which include recommendations regarding the athletes to attend the COE in 2011 and planning the 2011 COE program. He will be supported by Greg Chappell as National Talent Manager and other senior COE Coaching staff during this time.
CA will be working to replace Troy as CA Pace Bowling Coach as soon as practicable after further discussions with Tim Nielsen and an assessment of current needs in this area.
Australian Institute of Sport Director Peter Fricker also welcomed the appointment of Cooley to the important role.
“The Australian Institute of Sport works closely with Cricket Australia through the COE to develop young cricketers and prepare them for the rigours of international cricket, so to attract a coach of Troy’s experience is testament to the quality of the program. We are confident that Troy will help build on our record and tradition of producing talented cricketers who have gone on to perform strongly at the top level of the game,” Fricker said.
Cooley, 44, was a fast bowler for Tasmania in Interstate competition between 1985 and 1996, following which he became the Cricket Tasmania Pace Bowling Coach, Fitness Advisor and Under-17 Coach. In 2000, Cooley was given the senior coaching role at the Commonwealth Bank Cricket Academy. In 2003 he was recruited by the England and Wales Cricket Board as their Fast Bowling Coach before returning to the Australian system in 2006 as CA Pace Bowling Coach.
